Yes i wont be going out of my way to look for one .But why Brian already has it saves him looking for any more information about them. -
Pitch and toss brings back memories ,we were easily pleased back then.

It is a recognised variety Brian and your figures are spot on. CGS have slabbed 70 normal and 2 like yours have a look on the site. -
Thank you jerry i find it interesting and a pity the open 3 had been heavily cleaned.
-
would be interested to see how you go on Brian , please keep us informed preferably with pictures.
-
I would of thought it must show in someway Matt ,but would like to know what.
-
I have heard of this Jerry have you got a picture of a coin that has been treated. Alternatively how can you tell a coin has been treated in this way ,such as colour/tone or any other indicator ?.

Lovely poem peter .

Colin cooke sold a mint one last year for £10,000.00.

Yes its nice Matt, the obverse is what makes it . Most such as one i had 32579 (compare the two) are weaker mine was graded 75 and i swapped it twelve months ago thinking it would be easy to find a better one. Crazy really you can get most pennies in good grades quite easily ,yet a cheap one like this is a lot harder.

Hi Terry and welcome to the forum. -
Wouldnt bother Matt he can put it up for millions if he wants. Its a nice coin and graded 80 with a cgs value of £75.
-
Its now on ebay matt........£800 Dont no were they have got that price from ,maybe reading about them being scarce on here. Doesnt matter how scarce in good grade they are that price is ridiculous.
-
Sorry matt i dont no but the one at the midland is every month .
-
Grading the coin is the most important part matt as there can be a big difference in price . The grading book is the best way forward and just look at some cheap ones you may have to get a feel for grades. This site has loads of posts just on grading alone although it is an opinion and not really an exact science, will help you just reading through them I would not be in a rush to spend much money and if you can put any pictures up there are a lot of people on here who will help you on the grade and therefore a reasonable price to pay. The midlands that was mentioned is a coin fair and would of given you the chance to meet dealers and look at a wider range of coins in hand. I would not go to any auctions to buy anything until you decide what you want to focus on. Anyway we are all different so i am happy to be told i am wrong. Be lucky. Pete.

Welcome to the forum mavmd. Reading your post your already heading in the right direction and as rob says the grading book and some coin fairs is good advice.

After spending the last few days looking i have come to the conclusion the one i have is just a normal one that has been varnished/lacqured. I had my doubts as to weather they exist. Pete.

Coming second on that one with a bid of £1500 still makes me wonder why I didn't bid a bit higher. It seems very cheap with hindsight, but then the world was looking quite rosy at the time, prices for coins were edging up slowly, everyone was making money and there wasn't a financial crisis on the horizon. Go forward 5 or 6 years and the price of a 60/59 to the collector had doubled, whilst half the banking industry was spending its spare cash on changes of corporate underwear. Go forward another 5 or 6 years and the price has trebled from 2003, all paid for by government QE.It males you Wonder then at £4200 for the Spink coin plus the juice how much it will be listed for on the CC website £6,500 - it's in their hard copy October catalogue ! The coin also sold the same day the catalogue was emailed out.

I recently purchased a 1937 proof that is 2+B. After spending time searching they dont appear to be looked for and not scarce, there is one currently listed on ebay. However they are not listed by Freeman and c.g.s. dont recognise them. They are mentioned in David Grooms book who says "reports of obverse 2 being found". Obviously they were only used for some sets and wondered weather anyone had checked for this variety on there own proofs. Its was only cheap and the dealer had checked the one i bought. Pete.
