Yes it may well be guess work (being honest ) as can only go off the ones i have bought from pictures and had in hand Some of the ones that have been messed with / cleaned leave some of the lustre that may look like it has not been fully toned. at the mint.. We are not talking about the removal of all of the toning. Only by having them in hand can you be really sure and i have looked at pictures for the last couple of years. I would think (guess ) probably 1 in 100 of most denomination have been messed about with and cleaned on ebay and in this instance we are looking for ones that are the base metal colour that the MT ones are not. Coins are cleaned Not in this case to remove the MT but to get rid of anything on it so in the sellers opinion it makes it look better. The result being in some instances part of the mint toning has been removed as well.This then has the appearance in a picture of the toning not being complete and having some lustre.I do feel i am able to tell if a coin has been cleaned but am the first to admit i may sometimes be wrong. Looking at the one Terry bought ,i would have doubts (guessing again ) looking at that picture also ,but again in hand Terry says its ok. The large picture is another ,so that is a couple looking at photographs just on this thread i would be....... guessing 😊 if i did not have the benefit of both you and Terry having them. I did not mention your own coin was cleaned and just that some others may not be right looking at a picture.. Maybe the ones i have kept were much better and are not partial toning but full 100% NOT MT just like a 1947. A fully NOT MT coin there should be know doubt at all ,its the ones that are partial were the problem is in telling the difference from a picture. I have had a few good ones but have had a few that were rubbish , so although i may be guessingi have learned not to be sure from a picture and i cant be more honest than that.. Pete.

No Mike i probably havent explained very wel. If anyone looks at a hundred pictures of 1944 pennies only a few will look like they have no mint toning.Should you buy the few one may be ok ,one maybe cleaned and one just worn. So maybe only one has been cleaned out of the hundred . Petrol was just an example it could be a brilo pad or anything else that has took the surface dye off. Anyway as i said glad you got them and you did really well to find them ,sometimes we can only find out by having the coin in hand.

Just some cleaned and worn ,i dont mean all of them and just much easier to tell a good one from a photograph if its UNC. The ODD one that has been cleaned or the worn ones are more likely to look like a Not MT one in a picture.Otherwise they would just be normal which the majority are and have not been cleaned. If it looks bright which few do.........Is it natural with no HYpo or cleaned /worn 😊 More that its better to check the pictures and try to find them in UNC to be sure. If you have a pile of them they will all be different colours but a true NOT mt one should just look like a 1947 otherwise its still MT and just lighter. Made me smile........Warm soapy water 🙂 ,that wont do anything give it a scrub and clean it with something like petrol to get the hypo off. You need to put some elbow into it 😂 joking aside you know what a cleaned coin looks like and dont need to mess about with one. Again i think the large picture is a good example. If it nlooks bright.it may be cleaned 🙂

The ones i mentioned i did also say i hadnt seen and was just trying to help you if you wanted them , as far as the price i think that is more due to the fact that not many probably want them. I dont mean scarce as in only a few known ,just more you did well to find all three in a week. The post was for anyone else who may be looking ,your coins you have in hand so must be ok. An UNC coin will probably have been less likely to have been cleaned and IMO the large pictured one has been ,possibly starting to retone as a normal coin would.

Sorry to interupt the thread but IMO these are a lot scarcer than maybe Mike thinks and if he has just started looking ,he must of got lucky .🙂 I have looked at plenty in hand and thrown most away after buying from a photograph as a lot have been cleaned and if anyone is looking for them to edge on the side of caution.. The Hypo will come off as it would in circulation ,so probably best to look for ones that are UNC.with no signs of wear. Also ones that maybe look MT but should not be such as 1940 ,1947 have often been polished and will be glowing unnaturally a purple colour when tilted as the polish or solvent has been rubbed into the metal. Maybe nobody else wants them but if you are looking the genuine ones are scarce as they are errors in production. Only my opinion but if you do want one maybe have a second look at the picture (or buy from a dealer ) rather than like me throwing them in the bin when they arrive

I can understand the comments and people giving an opinion and yes that would be fair if the comments are true or correct. As far as giving something an airing Sword has been going on about his coin for four years ,so feel its just a personal frustration that he likes to take out with his keyboard Sword has decided to now hide behind his computer or perhaps looking for supporters to back him up and agree with him.

As i have mentioned on another post ,you dont know the coin was problem free for 70 years unless it was your own. How do you know that something on the coin was not removed just before and then came back , i think your just blaming the last person who had it and they probably only had it out of a holder for minutes. I can assure you circulated coins in collections have been handled much worse by people than ones who are experienced and looking at hundreds every week. The coins mentioned were both bought on the secondary market and feel its easier for you to blame someone for a coin your not happy with ,rather than just take it out of the plastic and kick on. It was just someone giving an opinion and taking a photograph , i am sure the thousands that are rejected are all in collections now with owners that are happy with them You mention nothing can be 100% proven and yes i agree so dont feel its fair for you or anyone else to just have a go at someone on a public forum whoever it may be. Its almost like..........Who can we have a go at today as i am pissed off ,have a brew , type some crap in a computer and forget about it and let the person or company pick up the pieces from the damage that may be caused. I dont like bullies or people who tell lies and am now starting to not like keyboard warriors RANT OVER . One positive that has come out of this is i need to go and have another look at my own again to check they are ok 🙂

The problem with some of these i think is the person who submitted the coin may of taken something off.This then makes the coin not look so bad when sent ,although could then just reappear in a short period of time. The grading company can only encapsulate / reject what they see at the time ,exactly the same as we can when we buy one from a dealer or auction .There is always the possobility a dealer or seller has taken a spot off one before selling it. They look ok today but the odd one may come back ,like the guy who posted on this thread saying he cleans them with vinegar before sending them.

Thinking about it also the few weeks leading up to the coin being sent to be slabbed the coin has possibly been handled by numerous people (without gloves ) and more than it was lying about for years before. If you buy a coin from a picture by a TPG and your not happy then just send it back ,its no different than any other coin.I mentioned before about buying them from auction and doing so at your own risk. I think you will get the odd one that may change over time ,just the same as buying one from any coin fair and putting in a holder of your own choice. Its an interesting comment you make about gloves as i only tried them once and threw them in the bin,i am much more confident just picking one up without them.Although i dont buy any proofs which i think would be the only time i would need to be maybe a bit more carefull. I have sent a few to be graded by cgs and although i have had a couple that were not perfectly encapsulated , have received back a coin that i was happy with before and still am. As far as the handling your making it sound like companies just get your coin ,spit on it and throw it round the room .I can assure you they all want you to get the coin back in the same conditiuon you sent it. I dont want to sound to harsh Sword but anyone buying at auction 😶 If your buying at auction and going off photos or a description and it turns up not as expected then whos fault is that. Yes you can blame lockdales or anyother auctioneer but like any coin if you dont look at them or ask someone else then its IMO our own fault. I have bought a couple that i could not get rid of quickly enough and learned but like any auction its better to be sure what you may end up buying rather than any disappointment after. Sometimes as i mentioned in another post its always easier to blame someone else and sure the seller was happy which is who the auctioneer was acting on behalf of.

Sorry but i am a bit thick ,so may of missunderstood and if so apologise 🙂 IF....You mean that the cause of verdigris and corrosion are due to the metal mix in the blank and thiese would not happen if the blanks had been properly prepared ? Then IMO i am not sure about that ,yes the metals and mixes (blanks ) are sometimes more prone to verdigris GROWING on a coin such as copper but surely its not the only reason 😶 On the other subject........................ As far as people sending them for grading and them developing problems after i feel your talking the odd one out of thousands and It is for the sender to check the coin before sending and the grading company to do the same and not start taking spots or bits off. If its a cheap coin just take it out ,remove the verd and keep the ticket.If its an expensive one break it out and resubmit with the ticket.and if its been left to long then live with it but dont blame someone else ,as thats always the easiest option. With regards the coin pictured it was purchased after (possibly well after ) the coin was slabbed ,so i doubt happened straight away and could of been years as a low UIN.If the coin was purchased in that state it should of been sent back if not happy the same as any other coin.If it was purchased at auction then like any other coin you take your chance if you dont view it in hand.

No he doesnt have a website Mike he just does a list every couple of months.I sent you his telephone number in a PM a couple of weeks ago. Looking at Daves last list he has / had a 1945 with 40% lustre.

Yes there was one recently were one side was fully MT and the other with none at all that Dave craddock had and although i didnt see it Bruce at Golbourn coins had on his last list. You will see them described as MT with 40% 60% Lustre etc.
