Often you will find diferences to Copper pennies of most years were letters / colons were re cut and repunched to continue using the same dies. Both your coins are OT Far colon after DEF, The re punched different position of colons IMO does not really mean any major variety and if it did there would be lots of different types. The main varieties for 1855 are...... OT Far colon PT Close colon OT Three colons after FID One with a DOT on Victorias Forehead.....A variety for some but only a flaw You really could go on forever Paddy ,so you can make your own judgement as to what is a variety or not 😉

Maybe if you want to find out just look at the dates from 7 to 9 rather than the full width.Gouby also mentions a different 9 i think.... as put the book away now its doing my head in 😉

Yes but as i have edited the post (at the same time) since Mike the 7 may well be closer to the 9 but still the same full width 🙂

I think Mike and sorry if i am wrong that you are saying you may be able to tell the difference by the date width. If so then maybe a look in Gouby will help you. He has F96 as 12-5 teeth and F97 variety BP1879Bd also as 12-5 teeth. The F97 the most common one has widths of 11,11-5 ,12, 12-5 teeth............So Yes F96 the type can be determined by the width of the date as is only 12-5 teeth. Atleast it is one indicator. The only other is F98 your new one 9 teeth 😉 Edited ..........Sorry reading again you mean the 9 being closer to the 7...May well be 🙂

Hi Bob and welcome. The search box (top right on the front page)is invaluable.There are no doubt lots of questions you wish to ask ,of which the majority will have been asked before. i.e. Coin storage , magnifier ,scales etc. To see things rather than pictures and to get the right answers maybe visit a coin show.You may even end up buying a coin that you like the look of after seeing one in hand. A Known variety but scarce....... 1854 Penny with DOT below the I in Victoria. CGS 70. Its similar to the Gouby BP1875Cd.. The CGS price is £150. £100 Posted Special delivery. Pete.

I think its just the one auctioneer at DNW ,i have never heard anyone else say it.Sometimes when DNW use someone else they dont say it either.

I often wonder what WOOD means as the auctioneer today always says it . The F14 was noticed and the F6a proof opened without a bid which makes me think others didnt think it was either ,maybe i was wrong and they even put it on the front cover. Always another day and hope if anyone bought anything they were happy with the price or to tick one off a list 🙂

Thanks Mike 🙂 The reason for me buying the Lot though was the one top left is the scarce one. The REV is different than any other year and one sold last week in LCA for £2600+ premium. its now on Richards site as a pattern with NO Colon after REG ,the sheild ,leaves ,stem and other differences. Not many about so was really happy to spot this one and was able to get rid of the others to help cover the cost.

Thats why i thought it was a 6 😂 i thought it was an 1858 W.W..............Even nicer then than i first thought. Hat off and a good buy , so an 1856 OT Scarce coin in that grade.
