Penny Acquisition of the week

A good find and decent one Jerry HAT OFF I was just about too post regards the 1914 until i read the above . I looked in the David Groom book but the 1914 penny does not get listed at all from what i can see ,even if to say just one type. -
Peter ...take a minute, the guy has explained why he wants a 1888 set. Most ,such as ones i have sold you can pick up already slabbed cheap I used to buy loads already slabbed for less than the slabbing fee. You need to remember not everyone is an expert and some coins are easier to sell after the £15 slabbing fee. Alternatively i recently paid £20 for a 1961 penny as had a gap. Am i a mug.....Probably. Am i stuck for £20......not if it helps me compleat a slabbed date run Lots of people want different things ,some want modern decimals and some lunatics collect farthings I would never advise someone to send a coin for slabbing thats upto them. Although i recently had one slabbed i paid £4 for off ebay although they say £375. I am not saying its worth £375 but think the slabbing fee was worth paying. Got to spend the time and look at what is worth slabbing and whats not. Some coins (pennies) i can sell at a big premium ,but have spent hours looking at prices. Worst case senario i seem to get my money back if already in plastic. Chill out ......you dont send them ,but dont be blinkered as there is benefits The big plus is some pennies in a slab are way to cheap and worth more broken out........but thats another thread Alternatively the ones that are expensive , i dont have a problem selling for more than i paid for them.

That looks a lot better Mick. As i said to small an amount for verdicare
-
Yes maybe Brogan just wants to do everyones head in Alternatively maybe list for £1,000,000 on ebay
-
As an afterthought from reading your post. Just because the verd is removed CGS will still reject for cleaning and corrosion. Although you have know interest its not just a case of we cant see the verd so know its ok. Its not just about marks but the tell tale signs under different light of chemicals/ work done. I can assure you they dont just look at a coin in hand . This post is probably more for Mick As has obvious signs of being cleaned.

All the lot does not look right comparing it with one. Even looks thicker but that might be as i have not got my glasses on
-
The price was right its one i swapped for a half sovereign a few months ago although the sovereigns (scrap) went up just after. I dont keep any duplicates and would sooner pass them on if i have a better one. Hopefully Paul will be keeping it

1872 scarce/ harder date to find and decent grade. Gouby BP1872Ab slabbed by cgs 70. CGS say £175. To keep to forum rules £100 plus postage Struggling to download cgs pictures but if your interesred please PM me. Pete.

Fantastic Job Jerry and hat off
-
Think in MIcks specific requirements ....will it still slab. Its not what most collectors would be happy with or in Micks case weather CGS would still reject it. I remember you bought a 1862 Half penny date you were going to work at from the Copthorne Collection. Did you ever do anything or left it as it was Jerry ?. I know your the expert (always read your opinions) and for that reason would love to see a picture. Pete.

Your UNC might be lustered ROB of which for that year dont exist really. As i mentioned i said NICE that does not mean UNC so please read instead of being sarcastic. Nice is nicely toned and problem free but obviously you want better ?. I Didnt say UNC.

Wide open question Three to four years ago i decided to buy a few pennies to put away for eighteen years or so. I didnt have a clue and learned quite alot since and continue to do so. The problem is buying a few got a bit out of hand and now struggling to find anything really as some varieties etc i am missing are unlikely to turn up often. Anyway its given me an interest, meeting new people, forum, speaking to auctioneers, dealers who have helped me so much. Would you turn to another denomination, key dates, patterns, proofs and the list goes on or just be happy to keep looking for the odd one to purchase. Pete.

What would you do ?.

Sorry to bring an old thread up . Been selling a lot of Pennies / varieties (some scarce) and just been looking at a post with regards varieties. Decided a while ago to concentrate on quality coins of key dates. These are for me and nothing to do with my cgs collection of pennies that are put away. Maybe i will get bored again in the future but believe certain dates of denominations will always be sought after if in high grade . Pete. -
Possibly Dave although a lot of the copper varieties that are not recognised and some even in unc 1854 you can pick up at a similar price than an 1860 F10. However leaving the varieties and proofs out not lots of dates 1825/60 but people dont seem to collect like the bronze. You could buy a nice 1831,34,37 for the same price as a really low grade scarce variety bronze £500/600 ish.
-
Didnt know you collected the coppers Mike ,really interesting series but some hard to find in top grade IMO. Surprised there is not more collectors of them as lots of penny collectors seem to just focus on the bronze .
-
For a tiny spot verdicare seems a bit drastic IMO. Plenty Ebay sellers have it listed
-
Not a problem and thank you. Will send you a PM when its posted as obviously will be a few days
-
Not any use to me. How about £90 including special delivery
-
Hope you mean fanny craddock
-
There are always going to be better ones and more than recorded as some collections are kept privately. If ten are known of an example there is not going to be less and the numbers can only go up like the 1862 Three plumes
-
Noticed a couple of scarce pennies in the next LCA. Hopefully part of a collection and a few more will be listed
-
That makes it an even better find So glad it turned up for you as it would of done my head in.
