Just got this 1951 penny sold as AUNC, I am still learning and interested to know what you all think to it. I am not very good at taking pictures, the change in colour is the flash, the whole coin is more like the darker colour you can see. Sorry, also cant figure how to move the reverse side picture 90 degrees, it looks ok in the file.

Paid £65 to an online dealer for this, so paid a bit over. I need to start looking at fairs.

Sorry about this, the reverse picture is straight on here and somehow I have put the picture on twice.

    Storage And Security

Hi all I have been busy buying up more 1960's coins, so not quite zero anymore, but still only a small selection. At this point I thought it could be worth asking your opinions on storage and security. Are there any recommendations what to keep coins in, where to have them and plus, would you keep them in a safe? My house is a relatively new build, so i only have an attic and no cellar. I have an area idea for a safe in my attic, but it would be a pain to regularly go up there to organise my coins, so there would have to be an enjoyment/security trade off. Again really i have no idea, so any advice would be great. Thanks Dan

    Brilliant Uncirculated

Hello all My collection is slowly building but it is becoming increasingly difficult to find BU coins. I still havent managed to complete the 1960's. At what stage or year is it acceptable to go for an UNC or lower, would I be correct in saying that after a certain point in time getting even an UNC coin would be impossible. On a different subject, I was talking to a friend of mine of whom has been collecting world war 1 memorabilia for 40 or so years. His collection is extensive, but he mentioned that it is becoming increasingly difficult to find good items as all the best pieces are now in collections, these are unlikely to be recirculated in the collectors market except by way of auction. Lower quality items are available, but at some point the market will slow down as the amount of items overall are finite. I thought that this was quite interesting and wondered if this is in anyway similar to the coin market. Relating back to the first section, at some point will it be impossible to get any BU coins? What do you all think? Cheers Dan

    Brilliant Uncirculated

Thanks for all the responses. I am always amazed at the range of information you guys have. I am trying to be systematic in the way that I am building my collection and I think that this is my problem. I think for the next year or so whilst looking to slowly work back chronologically I will see what older good quality items I can also pickup. This I hope could give me a core and theme to collect around. Thanks again

    Coin Fair

Hey guys Its my first coin fair this weekend at the Cedar Court Hotel in Wakefield. I would like to try and finish off my 1960's coins there. I am quite pleased with my collection so far, but I wouldnt mind a standout item and spend a bit more money than the few pounds that things are costing me at the minute. I know that this is a big question, but are there any recommendations for something really cool to start as my first key piece? Cheers Dan

    Coin Fair

I have never seen a gold sovereign, that will be quite interesting. What are the dealers like, are they easy to deal with or will they have my shirt?

    Starting From Zero

Hey guys Great website and forum. My grandfather died a few years ago and I have had a few of his coins ever since. I say a few, more like four consisting of 3 1994 silver dollars (no idea how he got these) and a 1953 5 shilling coin. I probably stare at them once a week, they are pretty cool and I tell my sons that when I die they can have them. I have heard of people collecting coins and really would like to get into it as it seems really interesting, but I am now suffering from information overload as the internet has too much information for when you know nothing. I just need a starting point, UK coins are what I think would interest me the most so I was going to start here. I would like to get some books, but again there are hundreds, so again the amount of information is daunting. Sorry about the lack of any knowledge, any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Dan

    Storage And Security

Thanks for the full spectrum of advice. I always thought that using banks for storage was something that happens in Bond films over in tax havens on the continent. I dont think I will be at that point anytime soon, i should imagine a collection to have a value of at least £10k before this becomes a consideration maybe. I can see how the collection values increase rapidly as I am already finding the coins are getting incrementally more expensive each year, so an expensive collection doesnt seem that difficult to achieve. The cabinets look good and i am going to check out the trays on here too. Thanks again

    Starting From Zero

I am feeling pleased, my 1967 coins have all now arrived. My plan is now to find all the 1960's items and then whenever that task is complete I will start with the 50's. Thanks guys youve got me started and given me a focus. I will keep you posted on my progress.

    Starting From Zero

After spending a few days trawling the internet I now have a full set of 1967 coins on their way to me. All from dealers, none off ebay. I will put on an update once they all come in. Exciting times, this could be the start of something great.

    Starting From Zero

Wow, the advice is brilliant, thank you all. It seems i am quite lucky for the fairs, I live near Wakefield and work near Harrogate. After trawling the internet I have found a 1967 coin set for £15, they are all circulated. No idea if this is good or bad value, or the condition of the coins. Chris, can you send me a link and I will buy the books you have recommended? Thanks again guys.

    Starting From Zero

Im quite pleased that Declan has given me a task of getting the 1967 coins. This give me something to focus on whilst doing other research. Thank you all for your help. Are there any good annual fairs in West Yorkshire?

    Starting From Zero

Hi Matt Thanks for responding so quickly. This is a bit clearer now, should I pick a few coins and try and find specimens from as far back as possible? Would this be a good starting point? Thanks again. Dan
