Penny Collectors Who Are You All
Colin G. replied to pies's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
It all depends on what you target as a collector. I accept that micro varieties may not appeal to everyone, but they do appeal to some. I agree that the colon/stop varieties do have to be very carefully considered across this series, because a vast majority are just weak as a result of die fill. It is surprising what information gets thrown up as a result of studying magnified coins, it gives you the opportunity to identify what die combinations can potentially exist. In fact the same could be said for the unbarred A's throughout this series. -
If it makes you feel any better, I spent half a day not too long ago counting border teeth on Victorian farthings

Half Guinea Gaming Takon , Bargain £165.00 At Saxbys

Woohoo I have a small box full of these...I am in the money -
No it can be web based, and also available as an app or download for PC or Mac. I have previously used drop box but it did require files to be in a specific sync folder, whereas with one drive, you just select which folders you want included, so there is no requirement to change folder paths which would have been a nightmare for me.

Possible Variety Viccies (1843 Farthing, 1863 Penny)

Certainly possible with the 1843 but would need much clearer pics to have any certainty. -
You don't know the sort of stuff I get up to

I have to admit I have tried a couple of external methods. I do back up across my own network, but have tried Just Cloud, who were an absolute nightmare, it was so cumbersome and difficult to use. I have recently given Microsoft Sky Drive a go and have been very impressed. It runs in the background and updates files in realtime. The original files remain on your PC and are backed up to the cloud, It also allows me to view and edit my files on my iphone and ipad and then updates them on my PC. Cost is also very good you get 8GB free, Then I think it was about £30 a year for an extra 100GB. And you can literally back up anything. Support has been very good...and if the CIA want to have a browse through my files they are welcome

Gary I have often wondered the same, and have also thought that it could open the floodgates, if someone sees that this coin realised £400 and then has one themselves, are they not likely to do the same with a "one sold recently on here for £400". This may also give the unsuspecting bargain hunter reason to think the coin does have some value when looking at future sales of similar items. I know that this is done with the best of intentions and I do actually commend you both for trying to do the right thing.

Penny Collectors Who Are You All

I actually do not have a single pre-decimal penny in my collection!!! Actually like Clive I do have the odd hammered penny that are mostly detecting finds. -
There are certainly some examples where a different letter seems to have been used to strengthen a weakened letter if the shape fitted, however it is very difficult to be certain. There are a couple in that series where an I appears to have been used to recut the upright of a D. The D appears to just be the remnants of the underlying D, that seems to resemble part of a letter T. The R does just appear to be a flaw, but better photos may help to clarify

What I find surprising is that my teenage daughter really likes Windows 8, she finds it much easier to use than any previous versions. Perhaps they have just targeted the next generation and us oldies have to adapt
-
Or it could be over a 3 or 5, I suppose 3 may be the sensible option, need to see what the other digits on those looked like
-
I was really chuckling at that one!!

When I first had windows 8 I thought "what have I done"....it does take some getting used to compared to previous versions, but it does have some good features...however, recently undertook Windows 8.1 and that was a disaster..no option to uninstall and it was just not compatible with a lot of my software and my scanner. I managed to find a way of uninstalling it, but it was a pain in the arris!! I do like windows 8 but as usual with Microsoft there are a couple of annoying imperfections.

Congratulations ,,,you deserve a gold watch for putting up with this lot and those spammers that occasionally drop in....excellent job keep up the good work -
They really do get obsessed with detail to stop faking, but many people just do not even look at a pound coin, as long as it feels right it will get spent. I don't think I have EVER had anyone reject a pound coin as fake when trying to spend it. I agree that it is more likely to be a move to try and generate some business...vending machines, shopping trolleys. I always liked the thrupenny bit, it had some weight to it, but you can guarantee this new coin will certainly feel a lot lighter.
