$36,800 realised for Gothic Proof Crown
Colin G. replied to Hussulo's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
A lot of dosh for a gothic crown. Personally I think the one in Baldwin's sale last year was nicer, albeit a bit more expensive. On the collecting side of things, I thought the 1839/41 proof halfpenny was a lot more interesting. Nice proof Rob, Good price too. You weren't the lucky bidder by any chance? Funnily enough - yes. Although I clearly wasn't the only one who noticed it based on the hammer price which is about $200 more than they would normally go for. Talking to Steve Hill at DNW yesterday, he also saw it, but didn't chase it. The one time that slabbing of a UK coin appears to have had a positive outcome, well at least for Rob!! -
I think they only have the older versions available for download (pre 1917) unless I am looking in the wrong place!! The site went down again whilst I was browsing!!

1839 Quarter Farthing
Colin G. replied to DaveG38's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Dave, I seem to remember there being a variety where the pearl numbers on the crown were different, but I cannot find reference to it at the moment. Eleven pearls either side of the crown is the norm. If I find the reference I will let you know. -

What's the coin market been doing?
Colin G. replied to Chris Perkins's topic in Rotographic Publications Forum
I think farthings on the whole have remained fairly steady. Bronze farthings seem to be fairly steady, but I would say that copper farthings prices seem to be rising slightly faster. Some dates that definitely need updating are: 1843 3 over 2 much rarer than price guides suggest, the Colin Cooke one sold for £100 in GF and I am unaware of any others even reaching auction. 1851 D Over D again very much underpriced, I would say this is much rarer than the 1844, but I suppose there are more date collectors than variety collectors. Again I am unaware of any making it to auction, and the Colin Cooke example hit 4 figures in AUNC condition. 1859 - Recent examples have been selling well and I would now put this as the joint second most expensive date in the copper series. 1844 first, 1849 and 1859 in joint second with 1855 WWR next. Chris, Is this the sort of info you were after or something more general? -

'Not' overstruck Spanish Dollar 1781.
Colin G. replied to basecamp's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Hi, I have encountered foreign coinage when detecting, which I admit threw me at first, when I was finding them on farmland. I think mainly due to the fact that the coins of the time had an intrinsic value, it was commonplace for foreign coins to be circulated. I also remember reading this in a reference book somewhere, but do you think I can remember which one!!!! I have mainly encountered French & Irish, yet to find a Spanish coin!! It must also be noted that the fact that this coin is holed may indicate that it formed part of a necklace or bracelet which has just become lost at some point in time. Where was it found? -
I tend to agree that it looks like a filled die, although it is difficult to tell from the photo.

I am after some help to identify my latest detecting find, this is my first full hammered coin , and I believe it is an Edward I penny, but I am not sure . Any additional info anyone can provide on this piece would be appreciated. As many of you will know, I am a collector of milled coins, so when one of these beauties pops up it generally has me stumped!!! Reverse Obverse -

Chris once my hammered collection expands beyond its current size (2 pieces ) I might just order your book. I have to admit I was not aware of that particuar title. My other hammered is a Tealby "cut" halfpenny, I think thats the correct terminology I will have to try and upload images to see if anyone can pick out any other info from the coin. Oh well my knowledge of hammered coins has advanced massively today, genuine thanks for the assistance, it is appreciated. -

Ta very much, is the mint specified in the legend, or do they have specific mint marks? Minted in Canterbury, found in Lichfield!! Got it I think, is it the reverse legend, which I think reads CIVI/TAS/CAN/TOR? -

put these 3 coins in date order....
Colin G. replied to basecamp's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Pinman, The one on the right is a lead token, I often find these when detecting. I am lead to believe that they date about 17c and were used by the farmer to pay farmhands, who then exchanged the tokens for farm goods. Wages must be bad if you can't earn enough to get a coin of the realm, and have to be paid in home made lead tokens. Some of the better examples have initials or even dates on them. If I get chance I iwll put some images up. They normally adopt a crossed or cartwheel pattern with raised dots in the segments. Due to them being simply made they are also normally uniface. Oops should have been "led" to believe not "lead" no pun intended!!! -
Congratulation, give yourself a big pat on the back, and make sure you celebrate your achievements!!!!

1826 farthing querry
Colin G. replied to josie's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Josie, This series is littered with repunched numerals/letters, and many of the dies appear to have been used even when showing considerable signs of wear/damage. I think this explains the faults you are seeing. -
Coins that go missing in the post, using registered post.
Colin G. replied to PINMAN's topic in Free for all
I would agree with the comments about recorded post and standard post. I find that more items seem to go astray when sent recorded than sent first class. I also find that I get very few parcels go astray when sent overseas, when compared to UK post which is a bit bizarre!! My policy when buying is if the item is low value pay first class and take a chance, if it something higher in value try and get special delivery. I remember one coin I sent to Italy using overseas insured which was high value. It went astray and I offered a full refund and started a claim against the post office, the item was returned to me 2 months later. It had turned up at JFK airport in the states!!! I eventually managed to forward the item to the buyer who was still wanted the item and re-sent payment. I included the original packing as evidence of the global tour the coin had taken. I currently have a farthing which seems to have disappeared en-route to me from the USA, hopefully it will turn up soon, these things can take time -
CHRISTO or CHRESTO ?
Colin G. replied to coin watch's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
There is no reason why an "interested collector" cannot study. That is how most of them become experts. Whilst I would not be able to comment on the practicalities of such a study because I don't know the first thing about hammered coins, I would say if you are interested in studying coin varieties there is nothing stopping you commencing such a project. Six years ago I started collecting farthings, and became fascinated with the varieties that were created by the manufacturing & die maintenance process. I still do not claim to be an expert in this field, but have gained a huge amount of knowledge in this area over this period, and have also had the pleasure of discussing the topic with numerous collectors who I otherwise may not have made contact with. I have to admit I was hesitant in creating my website on this subject, because of my limited knowledge, and the thought of how others would percieve the information I presented, but I would be the first to admit it has been great fun creating and maintaining the site, and I would recommend it to anyone. -
Welcome aboard Jason , what area of collecting coins are you interested in?
-
Jen, Welcome to the mad house!!! I am sure if there any coins that you cannot identify, if you can post an image someone on the forum will be able to guide you. Chris may correct me but I think there is still an issue with posting images on the forum, so if you do want any pics posting, e-mail them to me and I will host them for you.
