1847 WW .SOLID SILVER PLAIN EDGE VICTORIA GOTHIC CROWN MY GRADE E.F The artificially toned coin is the one being auctioned by marlybob1 on Ebay. The bright coin is the repro, honestly described as such, which mycopau sold to her for £1 last December.
-
It's the same repro coin, which she bought from Ebayer mycopau for £1 last December. She failed to get the money for it that time and since then, I'm told, has had another stab at artificially toning it. Ebay are onto her (thanks to Pete and others) and I doubt she'll get the money this time either. The other, with the reddish artificial toning, was originally on as a BIN but was taken down and has since reappeared as an auction listing. If you look at her feedback as a buyer you'll notice a seller of repro coins appears second on the list immediately below mycopau's comment.

Nice one Will.

Odd isn't it how someone selling tat plucked from change for a few pounds a pop has suddenly upgraded stock to the tune of a brace well preserved gothic crowns. A few nice 18th century coppers? Some decent bull head silver? Three or four high grade George V half crowns? Nah, straight in there with the gothics. I wonder if this second specimen has also received the ageing treatment mentioned in mycopau's ebay message about the one she bought from him. Didn't any of those bidding on the his repro bother to take a look at her other listings? If they do so since leaving their bids seeing a second has been added will surely set alarm bells ringing even for the most naive of buyers.
-
Oh dear. 23 bids now, and five days still to run.
-
To quote Francis Urquhart: 'You might very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment.'….
-
Oh well, even if your call doesn't result in the fake gothic crown being pulled then at least some good has come from it…...
-
Good for you Pete. Was she helpful? I see there are now 20 bids.

In his reply to me mycopau, who sold it to her, honestly describing it as a modern restrike, for £1 last December, said this: Looks as if she has had a second attempt at artificial ageing- I suspect through one of her eBay associated sellers. Maybe a bit if shill bidding going on?
-
It's now up to £650 with seven bids.
-
Good work chaps. I see the pound coin which started out as a BIN with a price tag of one million is now at £6.50 with ten hours to go. Time to grab yourself the bargain of the century…. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ONE-OF-A-KIND-MAJOR-ROYAL-MINT-DIE-SHARD-STRIKE-ERROR-2017-12-SIDED-1-COIN/123744765615

Reported, again. I suggest as many as possible here do so again too.

An interesting reply from mycopau: I did indeed sell this to the young lady in question - I also pointed out the error of her ways only to be fed with all manor of tall tails! I also informed EBay of the fraudulent listing though as per eBay norm - no action. Looks as if she has had a second attempt at artificial ageing- I suspect through one of her eBay associated sellers. More than happy to publish her details to PD members forum.
-
Definitely the same repro artificially aged. Surely attempting to sell these described as genuine is a criminal offence?
-
Five minutes ago I sent a message to mycopau alerting them to the marlybob1 listing. Should I receive a reply I'll share it here. I see the one she offered in February went for two and a half grand. There should be a law etc. etc….
-
Still trying to flog it. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ONE-OF-A-KIND-MAJOR-ROYAL-MINT-DIE-SHARD-STRIKE-ERROR-2017-12-SIDED-1-COIN/123734246210?hash=item1ccf22c342:g:5rwAAOSwcXpb3XnQ

Absolutely.

I've had this for at least 25 years and only this evening bothered to get it out and take a proper look ('Ooh Matron'). I've been Googling for information on ancient merchant's test chop marks but haven't come up with all that much so far. There's plenty to be had on 18th and 19th century silver coins with Chinese chop marks and I see also, who knew, some collectors clubs. I have found a few mentions of ancient test marks on tetradrachms but the information is scant to say the least. Should anyone here know about these I'd be grateful if you'd take a few minutes to share. Ta.

Tetradrachm of Ptolemy I Soter with chop marks.
Michael-Roo replied to Michael-Roo's topic in Ancient Coins
Nice Chris. Could those incuse (?) marks to the lower right of the eagle also be chop/test marks? Do you know which of the Ptolemys yours is? If I remember correctly there were ten plus Cleo. You can ID using the monogram in the field to the left of the eagle. -

There's a very decent collection at the Lady Lever in Port Sunlight too. -
1773 farthing with overdate - 3 over 7 ? New variety ?
Michael-Roo replied to JLS's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
PS: Actually, looking at it again, your coin may be a decent contemporary counterfeit. There are a several described as 'fish lips' portrait, and yours possibly fits the bill (or should that be fits the lips). Any opinions regarding this are welcomed. -

Re. 3 over 7: Not sure to be honest. Even though worn, your coin shows evidence of having been struck from very tired dies. Might it be yet another case of chipping/cud?* Look at how obvious the overstrike is on Colin Cooke's coin, both digits are clear. Note also the horizontal bar of the 7 is in line with that of the 3. On your coin what may be an underlying horizontal bar is lower, and sticking out slightly on the right. *(Chipping Cud, isn't that one of those places where the entitled hold their kitchen suppers? )
