    Something for a Farthing Collector

Historically interesting, but a bit like a cat with two heads I suppose: Exceptionally rare, but that doesn't mean to say I'd want to own one…..
  2. This 1674 farthing has all sorts of extra bits and pieces….
  3. 1673 farthing, no obverse stops, reverses A & B.
  4. Not an 'acquisition of the week' but certainly recent. No stops obverse and the second reverse die showing a wider date spacing. An example sold by LCA in December last year http://www.londoncoins.co.uk/?page=Pastresults&auc=151&searchlot=2310&searchtype=2 was described as 'possibly close to, if not the finest known example of the type'. This new one I've found is better.
  5. Indeed Peter, a very lucky find. Colin Cooke himself stated, in all his years of collecting, the best he saw was a good fine. The example he kept for himself (reverse A) he only graded as fine, and even this might be judged a little optimistic these days. Here is my reverse A (narrower date) coin, and then the two reverses side by side for comparision. I know you are a farthing collector too, do you have a 1673 no stops you could put up for viewing?
  6. Always good to hear there are other fans of the early milled copper varieties out there! This is the best I've seen, and certainly much better than my reverse die A example.
  7. Here's the obverse again, taken this time under a desk lamp.

    Different types and varieties

Hunting and documenting copper varieties, 1671-1860, would provide you with decades of hunting fun.

Ahh, them were the days (wipes away tear of nostalgia)…….

    Cataloguing Coins

DaveG38: 'The problem I found with 'standard' insurance companies is that they regard the whole collection as a single item, and the limit (for me) for a single item was around £6k.' We didn't have this problem with ours.

    Cataloguing Coins

Stephen, I have my collection included (covered and specified) with our home insurance. We're currently with MORE TH>N, it might be worth giving them a go next time you're looking for cover.

    1746 FARTHING KING GEORGE II

    Normal.

    Cataloguing Coins

I think what Stephen is asking is will a lack of receipts, purchase records, etc. be a problem when applying for cover from the insurance company.
  14. Allowing for the wear above and to the right of the ear on the obverse, and the weak central area and minor wear to the swag on the reverse, I'd say a decent NEF.
  15. Here's one which LCA recently graded as GVF.
  16. I see the same dealer has one on at the moment at £125 and described as GVF. I know many argue grading is subjective but this does seem a little optimistic to me. Personally, I would have thought GF nearer the mark.http://www.cambridgeshirecoins.com/epages/es121869.sf/en_AU/?ObjectPath=/Shops/es121869/Products/%221826%20HALFCROWN%20%28%20GVF%20%29%22 Regarding coin at the head of this discussion, I would agree with Garrett; GVF with problems.

EU referendum - in or out?

ChKy, don't worry, you make your point clearly and succinctly. The majority of decent UK people think as you do.

    More Pennies

Yes. Possibly been passed (gently?) through some sort of 'roller'? Look closely between 6 and 9 o'clock on the obverse. Not a true circle.

EU referendum - in or out?

'Political activists'. That'd be the people working, and dying, for representation and equality then would it?
  22. To continue the farthing theme: Here's a William and Mary farthing sized medalet in copper (1689?). Montagu No.15. The nicest of the two I have.

    Halfpennies

My other one (attached). I have an example of the Montagu copper farthing medalet featuring the same busts which is one of the best preserved I've seen. I'll upload images to the 'Let's See Your Coppers' etc./Farthings thread tomorrow.

    Halfpennies

It doesn't/isn't. Its just a shallow nick.

    Halfpennies

A halfpenny sized medalet (1689?). William one side, Mary the other. Montagu No.3. This is the better of two examples I have.
