I would say so, Paulus - however, for me, the gothic florin design is not quite as detailed in terms of having the pattern behind the flowers, and because the writing takes up more space on the reverse, I would say that for me it looks far more like a currency piece. Plus, I find that they are harder to find in the better grades for some reason. And they're smaller. Still, I can't afford either in good grades so my response is from looking at pictures and owning a few worn examples of Gothic florins! I guess it's just down to your opinion!

Yeah, I would agree - but if the tin is solid silver I can imagine in scrap the whole thing could be worth a fair bit, at about £30 per 100g.

I think looking at these designs has confirmed my idea - stick with pre-decimal; no modern coin will offer the same level of quality and originality of design. BTW, on that Magna Carta coin, why does the queen look like she has very few details? Is it just the light?

Sorry - I'm a bit new to grading too! Here are the pictures of UNC and EF - I was sold the "UNC" as UNC, so will be a little dissapointed if it's lower. Perhaps AUNC? Oh well - it's still just a cheap coin anyway!

I've just had a quick look through my collection and that's a surprisingly hard thing to do! Most younger coins are generally good and older generally bad; it's hard to get the full spread! And for them to all be of the same year and design! The best I can do is the set of George VI English Shillings - all .500 silver. Unfortunately 2 are 1940 and 2 are 1941. As I said - it is a hard task!

Yes - I would agree that big coins (over 30mm or so) have never really been right for people. Just look at all of the big coins that tried... and failed: copper pennies, crowns, cartwheel pennies and twopences, etc.

Hey! It is my favorite coin, so I felt as though it should be my chosen forum name! (Well, actually my fav coin is the gothic crown - but that wouldn't sound very good...)

Many crowns were still in circulation in the early 20th century; although 1902 crowns were commemorative, they were still used by many - since crowns were not phased out, as Victorian crowns ad been produced in masses right up to 1901. I would have thought that circulation stopped in around 1915 - 1920? Silver was getting expensive then - and these were big coins with very high .925 contents.

Recently I have discovered something equally as amazing: look at this 1853 proof set, with Gothic crown and gold. I can't decide what I like most about it - the coins or the box!

Yes, I would agree with you on that - but I believe to have one too (albeit in a worse grade than yours). I know the picture isn't great (It's hard taking one of such a tiny coin!), but would you agree that it's the same as yours? The crown is equally as strange!

I prefer sixpences from the same series. Despite beeing small comparing with halfcrowns. they are still very impressive. I'll have to get one of those. Never thought of it due to the size... But I guess such a design would look fantastic on anything! Good suggestion!

Hi, I have recently come across this piece, and have absolutely no idea what it is. I picked it up, because presumably - due to the age - it is silver, and so would be worth around £1 in scrap. I will keep it if it's worth a little more, though; I acknowledge that it has a hole in it, but am just curious of what it is. I can tell you that it is not in "collectors coins GB", or in any of my other books, but it has the Britannia on it so surely it is British? Please help!
