I have a very similar overstrike 1/1, though I'm not sure the dies are the same but it is an F33. I don't think there is anything special about the digit punches, but it is notable that the 'P' of PENNY is an open 'P'. Richard describes this on an F20 and a couple of proofs, but is it often seen on F33?

Here's one I found metal detecting last year, a Charles II halfcrown clipped right down to the inner circles and a bit over 8g! Jerry

The punch simply created a small central perforation, round or square. There is even a book about them. https://www.galata.co.uk/the-punched-hammered-coinage-of-1696 Jerry

The hammered were checked for weight/value and if acceptable were centrally punched and allowed to continue in circulation. Jerry

Has Ebay changed its closing process ?
jelida replied to secret santa's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
It’s automatic, I use Auction Stealer, and find it very successful, never missed a bid. I can set a bid days in advance, so if I have other commitments no problem. But I do put in my maximum bid, some you win some you lose. I occasionally give them a few dollars, and get a three second prior rather than ten second bid. They must have some direct access to the EBay system, and avoid issues with local broadband outages and upload speeds etc, so much less risky than hovering over the computer, though I occasionally watch my bid go in. I wasn’t clockwatching, I had set up my usual 3 second snipe, just in case of interruptions or outages. Jerry -

I’ve been looking for laughs in a number of posts now, but no, not even a chuckle. Are you sure you’re all posting in the right thread? Jerry -
Get an ice cream container, place a couple of tablespoons of flowers of sulphur in the bottom, place tissue over and the coin to be toned on top; replace the lid and place in a warm place. The coin tones very gently, more rapidly the higher the temperature. Check every day or two. Natural toning largely relates to atmospheric sulphur compounds, this just accelerates the process. Jerry

That is an exceptional spot. Well done! I dread to recollect what I paid for my two lis pennies (ex Comber), certainly four figures. I assume it’s not dated 1558 on the obverse? Jerry

Get your modern replicas certified here! Genuine fakes! Well done London Mint Office, I would never have thought of it! In conjunction with WRL it appears. And Blakeyboy’s favourite seller. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/234887771095?hash=item36b066f3d7:g:xY0AAOSwtY9j4Tvl&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAA0MedcjrSMGxQ3Cnzt8mY9pGNbrLe%2FAjkbJ4BNSTM5IdIbIQTSoHbzeTvMX5nAPL4brJXAzUt16bQDlQw4Xp8Hm2k%2BIMaalaEoptPpO%2FKEv5rQ98ZsQZd7NEeukaDSxH%2BoIpcU4boaay0LBblIshZ7%2B85MiPCF6IEpSsFVHuDNEsjQUym1MmBKDODzAPj9QKdnCiayhre%2FUNoiNLPVhtRwCMN7DYqUP7EFcbPtZC8tHvBpNzrwfI%2BDXtXHygx1VWXzRRrE9BqgqLxPTeBuJ7IWUQ%3D|tkp%3ABk9SR5rakv_EYQ Jerry

Was this the coin? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/165910473932 I did bid, but felt I couldn’t be sure. Nor with the ‘mule’ …. mixed up obverses in the pics I suspect. It would be good to see a photo if it is one. Jerry -
Penny Acquisition of the week
jelida replied to Paulus's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
In fact the tail if the ‘G’ is very variable in these early bronze pennies, many in my collection have these curved sides and some the more rectangular, but whether due to die wear or a formal font variation I don’t know. Perhaps proof coins, if from unworn dies, might clarify. Clearly the ‘G’ repair punch used here had the curved sides, and thus differing fonts on one coin is quite possible. Oh, and congrats on joining the VIGTORIA club, Richard. One of my favourite errors. Jerry -
Bacterial meningitis. That’s a bugger. Taken before his time. I must re-visit my vinyl collection, I have several Yardbirds and Jeff Beck albums. End of an era……..again. 😢 Jerry

That is an impressive piece of work. So either both coins are genuine, or neither is. As the PAS is not infallible, at this point I’m going to sit on the fence. I would comment that there are a number of Eric coins on the EMC database, of many different dies, including nice round coins. There will be more genuine coins out there. Jerry

I am surprised that this happens in your area, it certainly doesn’t in mine (Wales, Hereford and Shropshire) for non-treasure items and for two fairly straightforward reasons; firstly, valuation (and it’s costs) is not a funded part of the FLO’s remit, and indeed could open him/her up to challenge -and secondly, for a non treasure item a museum ( or other State entity) has no right of acquisition and therefore advance valuations would be a pointless expense. Of course, should a finder wish to sell a non treasure find, then normally both parties will seek valuations informal or otherwise and hopefully reach an amicable settlement. I have recently undertaken to donate a Saxon coin that I purchased at auction (Noonans) as it is an important Herefordshire find to the Museum involving a £5k gift on my part , the purchase price was taken as the market value. That coin had been through the PAS and recorded by the EMC in 2022 without valuation - difficult anyway as a unique coin. Even for Treasure items, valuation comes late in the formal process and then only after a wish to acquire has been expressed. If Treasure is disclaimed and returned jointly to finder/ landowner, it is up to them to sort out their financial commitments to each other - hence the need for prior agreements. As I stated earlier, it does not appear that this coin, if indeed a find, ever entered the PAS process. Jerry
-
The PAS will not value a find, though ‘Treasure’ items are valued by the ‘Treasure Valuation Committee’ as part of the Treasure process, if found to be Treasure and a museum wishes to acquire. As a single find it would not qualify. But this coin does not appear to have been reported to the PAS, and I suspect that the landowner is unaware of its existence, if genuine. To my mind it is not an obvious fake, as most are, and indeed may be a die duplicate of the PAS one . Jerry
