    1844 crown real or fake?

Edge has incuse lettering but it looks like it was done by a panel beater lol

    1844 crown real or fake?

yes just as indistinguishable as the reverse. No pattern visible on the ribbons no hair visible on the nape of the neck

    1844 crown real or fake?

But yours still look like leaves and you don't have an FA cup instead of a plume in the left part of the crown

    1844 crown real or fake?

Wow really? it's junk the leaves are not correct just lumps. Look how thick they are almost 3 times thicker in density. Look at the lion in the top right shield the tail is supposed to come from the haunches and go directly away from the body with the tail leaning towards the right center jewel. Not stuck underneath the lions neck and mane? the length of the lions arms are wrong short stubby blobs and the inner border is too close to the shield border. I would bet my life that its fake. Our craftsmanship on coins are some of the finest in the world. That coin is an eyesore if ever I saw one. Typical fake coin aged to look old an worn but if you look closely nothing is actually worn at all. Even where the ribbon ties are look at the branches to the left and right. the right hand one is twice as thick as the left and they are both twice as thick as the real coin?
  5. Kind of ironic that they should ask us to pay 236 million to leave the EU when twice we let them off what they owed. Double double standards
  6. Right where to start. 1882H Once cent Listed with OBV 1 and OBV 2 which I have no problem with as in identification other than there is a transitional OBV 2 / OBV 1. reported yet not confirmed. I have what could be a transitional but the opposite way around obv 1/ obv 2. the marker is the point at which the truncation touches the border beads there is an outline of another bust. But that is for further investigation. 1881H has a very rare variety with the N's only having 1 serif. I have 1882H with the same and also 1882H with both serifs. I have seen a handful of the single serifs on the 1882H and are not as rare as the 1881H but still considerably scarcer than the normal 1882H. Now I come to a stumbling block. There isn't any info on different reverses used for 1882H. The two coins I have are completely different. Different font sizes and different beading sizes. the 1884 uses the same obv dies as the 1882H with obv 1 being very rare on the 1884 which as shown on the picture would look like the first pic top left. The 2nd 1884 shown matches up with obv 1882H above it so that is fine both are obv2. But the left hand 1884 is different to both the 1882H and 1884 obv 2 forementioned as in the nose with a distinct hook and the top of the tiara where it touches the bead on the normal obv 2 it sits just under the bead and is narrow in its make up. The bottom left 1884 with ? has a wider jewel and is attached to the bead. Also the makeup of the profile is also different all obv 2 have an indent in the chin on the underside and the chin is curved this coin is angled no curve to speak of and no ident but it isn't obv 1 as it would be the same as the coin above it . Also notice the right upright of N in regina. Both on 1882H and the 1884 obv 2 below the upright points to a border bead on the inside ring on the left hand coin it points between two beads. So could the left hand 1884 be one of these transitional OBV1/OBV2 as the 1882H obv 1 also points between the beads? I hope that doesn't sound too muddled I am just lost as to identification. Be interested in any ideas or info on these . Thanks chaps

    1882 H and 1884 Canadian Cents

yes I have found some more info on the obverses it seems there are transitional dies at play. There is obv 2/1 which has 2 varieties and obv 1*/1 Which is probably what the coin is I can't identify. As for the reverse There are no recorded different reverses used for 1882H So the one with the larger font and larger beading is unrecorded for whatever reason. Could be an old specimen strike or dies used from such as the coin does look to be in higher relief. I'll put some feelers out see what i can glean

You would of thought being the money orientated operation that it is LCGS could easily produce an extensive list of varieties and sub varieties but I guess they would rather charge everyone £90 just to browse information they gathered off the back of collectors. Would of been nice to see them take the NGC and PCGS approach. Couldn't do them any harm. I remember when I was a member of the site before they took our money and threw us on the scrap heap with a £90 demand to enter the site again. There some extremely valuable coins I wasn't even aware of even in the decimal series. Off the top of my head a particular OBV/REV pairing on the 1974 10 pence is valued in the £1000's and 1951 festival crown having at the time many moons ago 11 different varieties. It is a travesty that this information is readily available. Hell if it was a lifetime membership of £90 I'd cough up in a heartbeat but £90 a year sorry that's taking the proverbal

Sorry My bad I should of put 1860 6+G Which disappeared from spinks between 2014-2018 and on the first entry line for a coin in F grade £500. Now as we know if they know of a coins existence but has not been through sales or they don't have any sales info they attribute Extremely rare. So by entering a figure of £500 to me indicates at least 1 coin had sold somewhere? whoever the joker is in charge of publication data has no bloody right to remove any variety from the book when the coin collecting masses are paying his wages and paying for a detailed historic record of coins. His personal feelings have bugger all to do with anything and are his opinion only and remain that. Messing with publication material is to me a gross misuse of position and now that the book is in 2 parts with the decimal coins in their own book all the variety types known should have their place in the book if only for historical reference as to the workings of the royal mint. Where is the entry for the 1826 Half Penny with Roman I for 1? . I know of at least 3 in existence and certain publishers also have been told this and with proof. But of course I forgot my names isn't XXXXXXXX.

I have said it many times it seems like unless your names XXXXXXXXXX good luck getting a variety published. You can even send the info to XXXXXXXXX and it still won't get published because they didn't find it. Or worse still they will tell you what you are seeing is an illusion yet the pictures and descriptions I have seen from themselves are borderline nonsense. The only way to have this information and has been said to me before is to do it yourself. I know for a fact the guy behind the spink book doesn't even want varieties in the book and if proof is the eating of the pudding 2018 book now omits 1860 6+H Penny variety. Which seems very strange as there was a price structure against the coin so it must exist somewhere. About time the guard was changed and the stuffy well to do's removed.

I saw this the other day. I had to chuckle but there are some serious undertones in the language he is using. Actually he almost goes as far as to threaten anyone who disputes what he says and will hack the doubters and generally make life uncomfortable for them. Nasty little oik needs a slap.

Coin Conservation / Restoration. Is it cleaning?

small splodge to the left of the T Funnily enough I just saw the definition on PCGS site about ungradable coins which covers everything we already know but the one thing they do not class as cleaning is this " 'Dipping' (the removal of toning with a chemical bath) is not considered cleaning under this definition." toning is a natural process of a coin. interrupting it to me is cleaning. If they can accept that criteria then they should accept verdigris removal. One is purely aesthetically motivated whilst the latter is damage prevention and surely holds the higher moral ground?

Don't like this either looks like the lettering bottoms have all been carved by hand to make them look like originals. The detail is completely flat everywhere . I don't believe our craftsmanship was ever that bad https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1707-E-Half-Crown-Sexto-edge-Queen-Anne-Rarecoin-Anomaly-sexto-edge/123138960774

not the greatest example but only one I could find on the bay but see the difference where the legend sits. There could be other die varieties. Krause will list the most common but sometimes it does leave out some varieties obvious reason page space or the book would be needing a forklift truck to move There is a remote possibility it could be a mule because your bust type with the gap between G. and PORT with the P at the front of the head is from the KM# 370 bust but that obverse didn't start until 1820. So could it be a Mule 370 bust with km#365 date? I would seriously doubt it though

yes 2g over is I would of thought way over the tolerance . You see a lot of coins/fantasy/medalettes in the mixed lots carefully place to show enough to gain interest from would be punters. From a distance they look ok and the lots seem like bargains. Sadly that old saying always rings true. If it looks too good to be true it generally is. The bulk sellers know what they are doing and it is one way of getting these questionable coins in to the marketplace without actually selling it as a single item. I had a lot with 6 bermuda crowns and some other large foreign crowns. As soon as I opened the parcel about 20 coins flew over my shoulder and stuck to my industrial magnet lols. (authors creative licence to slightly exaggerate ) But it happens more times than not. I expect nothing so can't be disappointed. Always a surprise or 2 in those lots despite how recycled they are. They normally get the diameters right but fail on the weight. Surprised though that you say a dealer sold you it unless he was unaware as well. I wouldn't of thought a reputable dealer would try to pull a stroke as it would finish his reputation and ultimately his business.
