Fully agree. If you're collecting the different designs, just find a nice 2015 from change. I did the same!

Hi Jordan - I agree with what Unwilling Numismatist says. The upside down writing coins aren't any more valuable - the writing on the edge can be either way up, each type is normal. The Commonwealth Games coins of 2002 are worth about £5-£10 each if they are the England, Scotland or Wales versions, the Northern Ireland version goes for quite a bit more - perhaps £30 ish. The 2012 Rio handover coin is also perhaps worth £4-£8 on a good day. Basically, none of the bimetallic coins will make your fortune, so I would keep the best one of each type that you have (if you are interested in keeping them at all) and then spend the rest. I doubt if it's worth the hassle of selling them on eBay to make a relatively small amount extra (but you may well disagree). There are a few others that are scare or rare, although they don't appear to be all that popular and so the prices are fairly low. Welcome Jamie. When I rekindled my interest in colecting coins a few years ago, I started by looking to have one coin of each main circulating predecimal denomination, from the quarter farthing to the crown, and then by looking to have at least one coin with each different monarch's head on it (just as far back to Charles II at the moment, I haven't dipped my toe into the world of hammered coins...yet). This approach meant that I soon had 'a little bit of everything' - which then perhaps leads you towards areas where you might want a few more. I buy them with no regard to resale but look to buy them relatively shrewdly rather than buying the first one I might see. My coins are in a whole variety of grades; I would rather have something scarcer/more interesting in lower grade than something more common in very high grade, but to every general rule there are always exceptions and you'll probably find that you will occasionally push the boat out for something really appealing to you. Lion and Griffin are my favourites so far. If I could only keep one, it would be the Lion, but that's also because I'm English.

I'm collecting the gold bullion versions of these. Haven't seen any mintage figures so far - I think they were still minting the Lion and Griffin until the very end of 2017 so probably haven't released final figures yet. I don't think there are actually any issue limits for the gold, silver and platinum bullion versions but happy to be corrected.

I agree about the 1908 half crown. I'd definitely be keen to give it a new home. The 1887 florin is rather nice as well. Am away for a week, starting tomorrow, but I will see what has been offered when I get back on Sunday 4th March if the deadline hasn't already passed. Hope they all find good homes.

Trying hard to find the positive - these coins are not aimed at the likes of us. If they prove the gateway drug for some other collectors who may then dip their toes further into numismatic waters, then all well and good. There's no way I would like to have any of those in my own collection, no matter how rare or valuable they may be.

Was lacquering fairly common, and why was it done? I have a few bronze coins that have a different sort of sheen and finish to the others. They don't appear to have been obviously cleaned, but they look a little different. Two of them are 1930s George V, one is Victoria bun head.

I'm all for interesting circulating commemoratives, but this continuing infantilisation of our coinage is a shame, in my opinion. I think the forthcoming 10ps will follow a similar path, yet I'm sure I'll look out for them!

I think it looks OK, and I think the 1709 E 3rd bust is a known type, but more knowledgeable folk will doubtless be along shortly. I have looked for pictures and looked through the LCA sold listings but can't see another one!
