  1. I know it has been said before but its times like this you realise how much knowledge and passion there is on this forum for coin collecting. Also very envious re the 1903 open 3's guys. I am struggling to find even one passable example. Thanks for the knowledge. I am now digging back through all my 1895-1905 pennies!!!!!! cheers Brian
  2. Just checked all my 1902 pennies, 27 in total ranging from good to unc. all are curved.
  3. Very interesting. All of mine are curved. Will bust out my other low level spares and see what I can find amongst them.
  4. Thanks Pete, totally appreciate that
  5. Think this has probably been asked before, but is there a way of retoning or dulling down cleaned coins. I have recently been given a load of old copper, all fantastic pieces, but unfortunately cleaned. My son has also got quite a few given to him today. The coins have no scratching, so think they have been dipped. There are a number of really detailed Victoria bun head pennies and half pennies as well as a number of really good George V pennies. Is it just a case of time? Thanks all.
  6. I like to research things before I jump in which is why I asked the question. I have just been looking at as many 1902 LT pennies as I could find. Out of about 60+ I found online I have found 3 others with the very same anomaly. As you say it is probably just a die break, but interesting!
  7. The reason I asked is that the raised section under the "0" is very straight. Surely if it had been a flake it would be less uniform. You could be right but always worth an ask to get other opinion's. Always keeping my fingers crossed that I may find something new and interesting
  8. Jerry did you use the gel or the liquid. Just curious. Nice demonstration by the way. Thanks
  9. I decided to have a try of a heat gun, my wifes craft one. I got a few naff coins, polished them then rinsed and cleaned them and left them over night. The following day I got out the gun. My first mistake was to use a jar lid, after heating both sides I have actually silvered the coin. It looks lovely but now looks silver plated still with a high gloss. The next I did on a rack, although it did slightly mute the sheen it didn't make any real marked improvement. maybe I am doing it wrong. At least I know a cheap and effective way of giving old worthless coins a nice shiny silver coating so a win there =D
  10. I had never heard of it before so have been doing some digging. It is predominately used in Jewellery making and uses a chemical reaction rather than a layer or film on the coin/bronze. Think I may invest in some and try it out on a few cheap coins to see how it goes. I noted that the gel form is said to be more stable so lasts longer. Will probably order some next week and do some experimentation. Its purely out of interest and I am now really intrigued.
  11. Here is an example. Victoria 1888 Halpenny.

    Clubs and societies

I had my first visit today to the Tyneside NS and was pleasantly suprised. The members were a friendly bunch with a wide variety of interests. It was nice to be able to talk to someone face to face and also talk about things that I was interested in without the old "he's off again" type attitude. I think from my first experience I will definately being going back and have already paid my membership fee's. The auction at the end of the meeting was interesting and worthwhile, only wish I had taken some money with me, although the wife wouldn't have been overly pleased. I think there is definately a place for both the online and offline groups as it is also great to be able to put a face to the person you are getting to know. I have had the chance to talk to and get to know a number of members on here so far and would go so far to say i would call them friends. I hope that will be the same with the Tyneside NS, which I am sure it will. Lots of great characters and like many on here loads of knowledge from many years of collecting. Thanks to Nutsaboutcoins for introducing me to the group.

    Time for a proper hello

Hi Dan, Welcome to the Forum. I only recently came back to the hobby as well, very similar story, without all the running!!!! I have found this group a fantastic place to learn with brilliant people willing to help and advise. Also had members who have helped me out with coins, they know who they are and I am very grateful. I had been looking for somehwere I felt comfortable and was able to talk about my hobby with like minded friendly people and found it right here. So pleased I joined the forum. I have been inspired by the fantastic coins and collection's and have managed to find my niche, although if something else comes up I like the look of and can afford I still get them. Enjoy and hope to talking to you on the forums. Regards Brian

    Clubs and societies

Nutsaboutcoins, I was actually thinking about coming along to one of the Tyneside NS meetings, but was not sure how I would fit in or like yourself what I would get out of it. I suppose it would be a good chance to meet people with similar hobbies and interests. Its Gateshead where you meet isn't it.

Roman coin novice, is this Roman?

Hi All Took advice that Peter psoted on the last persons post and was given my answers. It is a Roman Egypt - Alexandria - Antoninus Pius AD 138-161 - AR Tetradrachm 13.88g Emperor head rt Tyche standing holding cornucopia and rudder year 4 - Koln 1332. Low grade Silver Billon. Will remember to look through all the posts first. Cheers
  19. Hi All I was given a load of coins today from a friend who found them in his fathers draw after he had passed away. He knew i collected so has given them to me. The majority are milled coinage that I am familiar with , however this one is a mystery me. I had a quick look in Seaby - Coins of Great Britain and think it maybe an Antonious Pius. But haven't a clue what type of coin. It is about the size of a shilling, quite thick with a reasonable weight. I think it could be silver. Any help would be appreciated
  20. Agree with all the above statements, Rash that is definately a truly magnificent collection and something I will most certainly be using as a point of reference. Thanks for sharing.
  21. Has anyone else noticed lines on the Obverse field on the new 20p as all 6 examples I have found so far all have them.
