Penny Acquisition of the week
terrysoldpennies replied to Paulus's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Hi Jerry , I think Pete is referring to the Two different date widths of the BP1898B with the straight crossing centre bars of the last 8 . Your new example looks as though its the narrower type 10.75 tooth now classified as BP1898Ba , top example in the picture below. The bottom example in the picture shown below is the wider one at 11 teeth with the 8 over a tooth , Pete hasn't said but would probably be BP1898Bb. -
How's your garden looking after fine weather and time?

I see you've used the correct spelling for Berberis , well as I have said on here before, spelling is not my best subject. I started to write my post about the hedge and was not sure how to spell Berberis and so I asked my wife , well she got the wrong end of the stick and being a woman, naturally thought I was referring to the west end store of the same name , and as she is normally excellent at spelling I wrote it down without a second thought . -

That reminds me about the time some years back when I planted a section of hedge with Burberry plants , well what a mistake that was, it was an absolute bar steward , I cut myself to ribbons on the dam thing , well as you can guess it had to go, so that was one lesson I learned the hard way, choose you plant types with care -

The blossoms on my trees this year are amazing , we live on the top of a hill and its not unusual for all the blossoms to blow off, but the last few days have been kind to them and the result is a profusion of colour. Picture of my cherry tree below.- 150 replies

Did any of you manage to see the Transit of Venus across the Sun on the 8th June 04 . I was on Holiday at the time in Derbyshire and I was lucky enough to get a very short gap in the clouds . I managed to take this picture through the glass of my welding helmet . -
It wasn't easy , and I suppose that's why the bidding stayed low.

Hi Blake , that's the one I bought and posted on here the other day. its an F28 obverse 5 with reverse G its very rare and on Richards Rare list. Its the only year that obverse 5 is to be found with reverse G.

i've just noticed that yours is paired with a different Obverse as it has a Narrow Date , my example has a wide date. -
Last week I picked up a decent 1915 Recessed ear penny [ show on the next post] . That got me thinking about the life of this die, from its start to its destruction, and so I hunted around and managed to find an 1916 example with a die crack running right across the coin from the A in GRA to the D in DEF on the other side of the coin. The crack is so bad that it must have meant the end of the die, and the production of this type. Pic. On the left starting at the top is an early 1915 strike without the crack , but note the tooth in question seems smaller than the others ?. Next down is also a 1915 and appears to have a small curved bite out of the bottom of the tooth . Third down is a 1916, it has now developed, and a large section is missing from the tooth. Finally the bottom insert also 1916 shows the final extent of the tooth loss, as this is the example with the die crack, also shown in full on the right side.
