Irish Viking coins found in Sweden?
Matteo95 replied to Margareta Aronsson's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I don't think it was produced to be sell as genuine .... too different ... moreover I think these copies were probably given as gadgets with some commercial products .... for example here in Italy a lot similar copies were given with chocolate , biscuits , newspapers etc during the 70/80's -

Correct weight for 1804 BoE Dollars
Matteo95 replied to Paulus's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Do you mean this http://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces16742.html ? -
Yes , it's a Venetian coin called Soldino. I can't understand clearly under which doge was struck , maybe Michele Steno. You can find an interesting explanation about the circulation of venetian soldini in England on Richard Kelleher's book " A history of medieval coinage in England" at page 154.

Elizabeth II , the sovereign of my year of birth , 1995 . -
this is the first marengo ( from wikipedia ) . It was struck after the battle of marengo. The 20 lire were struck in Italy also before 1861 in the kingdom of Sardinia as they were struck in all the states that were part of the Latin monetaru union.

Yes indeed ... I looked for one of them in high conservation and good price for a couple of years for my collection of marenghi ( how do you say in English ?) ...Now finally I find it ..

Matteo95 replied to Mark240590's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Yes, I agree ... The field of the countermark should be more or less , toned as the portrait .. -

Hi all !! I am very happy and proud to share you my new acquisiton . I've bought it today at a numismatic fair. It's a quite common ( but rare here in Italy ) Henry VII groat , class IIICi ( I used the Stewartby's work for the classification ) . What impressed me is the condition of this coin. Do you like it too ?
-
yes I Know , I saw the last aution but it wasn't my field .. I am saving money for the next auction that includes my preferite period of english coins ( Edward I and II ) . Auctions catalogues can be very usefull in certain cases but I have to say that are also quite expensive !! 25£ for a catalogue ! I mean in Italy the majority of numismatic house auctions send to you their catalogues for free ....
-
Thanks azda for your reccomandation !! I know quite well that book because I bought it last year , Yes it's very easy to use , photos could be better but , considering the price it is very good . Personally my preferite book about english medieval coins is "English coins " by Lord Stewartby, I think it is more detailed and updated than others. Thanks ! yes it could be a hoard coin , there are no signs of circulation .

Matteo95 replied to Davethepitch's topic in Beginners area
I didn't understand your first message . I mean when I read it the first thing that I thought was : it happens and surely will happen also in future , this is one of the problems of a platform like ebay ; and well me too I would like to buy some coins but are too expensive for my wallet and so I have to go to others coins . P.S Rebember that there are also some softwares that makes the offer for you at the last second . Regards Matteo
