If you are getting outbid then let it go and don't worry about it. eBay is good but it's not the only place to buy. I agree with Jon look at dealers and buy the best you can but don't think everything has to be UNC or better.

Interesting metal detecting finds
IanB replied to George111's topic in Nothing whatsoever to do with coins area!
I think you are right about it being the lid of some sort of stopper, however I reckon it was chased by hand using small punches. The metal would have been domed in a block then filled with pitch to support it and someone would have quickly chased the design into the metal, probably taken about 15mins to do. -
Let's See Your Toned English Milled Silver!

I think some people on here scan their coins on a printer somehow. I have never done it but I am sure someone can explain the best dpi needed etc. -
The most effective method to check the quality of a precious metal is through the assay process, I believe the Assay Office have been doing this for years http://thegoldsmiths.co.uk/about-the-company/the-trial-of-the-pyx/ Annealing sterling silver 92.5% will bring copper to the surface and is called fire stain. Pickling in a 10% solution of sulphuric acid will remove some of this especially if the silver is quenched whilst still warm this will bring the fine silver 99.9% to the surface

I really like the 1977 Crown. We all had the Jubilee coin when we were kids but I lost mine years ago. Its nice to have a good example of it that I will hang onto this time.
