Penny Acquisition of the week
mrbadexample replied to Paulus's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Thanks John. I'm surprised I've not spotted that before. I've had a look through Richard's to see where it pops up across the series. Must pay more attention. -

I've just noticed that the second A in BRITANNIAR is filled at the bottom. Mine's the same. Are they all like that? -

I'm not convinced those haven't had a bit of grown-up tinkering somewhere along the line, but the first couple made me chuckle. -

I'm not sure you can Paddy, but I've noticed recently there's an option to send an offer to interested parties, so presumably you pick a number and it automatically sends it to those watching. It's the blanket spam button I think. -
Anybody know how LCA plan to handle their June auction?

It's because we're only allowed out once a day. -

Does anyone else feel that, coming from a "General Manager", this is a completely unprofessional response made with little or no regard to the question asked? I'm not sure it's any better than no response at all. -
We're a plague, nothing less. If I had a big red button that would wipe humanity from the face of the planet, I'd probably press it.

Depends on how you class the i. I had "seriousness" initially but didn't like using the i because it's not as short as the rest. Plus you could stick an s on the end to make 14, should you so wish.

It was originally listed as "scarce open 3 variety".......

It is. I've often been impressed how the penny guys can identify even the most knackered of washers, but when it comes to halfpennies there don't seem to be as many pointers. I'm getting better but frequently have to resort to counting border teeth to pin down reverses. There seems to be very little in the way of colon pointings etc.

How much will the coin market be affected by COVID-19?

Thanks Rob, I see the inconsistency.

I'll be honest, I don't "get" this. Isn't this effect just from handling? The coin is spent, and fingers / trouser pockets etc contact the bust and obverse fields but the edge and legend prevent contact with the fields behind. The reverse is a busy design and again largely prevents the fields from being touched. I struggle to see this as being cleaned. If I'm wrong, tell me.

That doesn't bother me, I don't think it's worth giving a grade on ebay - you just open yourself up to disputes. -

Nice coin, but I cringe when I see dealer's pictures taken in the hand like this.

I also no longer use them after suspiciously winning lots at my maximum bid only. In fact, I don't even bother to look at what's on offer, less I get tempted. Are auction houses required to keep records of all bids made? -
Yes, obverse 7 for me too.

...is that they directly profit from the sale of fakes, so they pay nothing more than lip service to preventing it.

I've spent a good few hours over Easter watching the solitary bees round the bug hotel. It's been like Biggin Hill some days. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rErO8E6WNMI Seeing them emerge into the world is quite satisfying: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q73F5LpcU1M
