    Help with identifying Victoria1863 Penny.

Welcome to the forum Rob. I don't see a die number on your coin. That doesn't mean that there isn't anything there, just that I can't see it. You might have a hard time showing it due to the corrosion. If there is a number it won't be directly under the 6, but below and between the 8 and 6., like this one from Tony Clayton's site.

    Charity coin disposal

Good grief. It seems strange when you can go in and buy a coat for 50p (probably). Surely it would do them more good to price sensibly - they must know that lot's worthless.
  3. Despite the proclamation I don't see it as a coin. I can't spend it in my local shop. To me, it's just a round shiny thing.

Indeed. I was delighted to pick up the shilling for a little under estimate.

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

I've reported it. I don't suppose it'll help but if enough of us report it then it might get taken down and he'll have to relist it next week instead.

    St James' Auction results

That's the one Kev, thank you. £2400 hammer. It went unsold at DNW today despite an inviting £1500 start. Unfortunately I don't have the funds at the moment - I suspected I was missing an opportunity. Interesting that you used the Sixbid search engine instead of the Baldwin's one. I must remember that.
  7. Quite extensively, by the looks of some of them. I'm not sure how far you'd get these days trying to spend your Charles & Diana 25p on sweets.
  8. Bearing that in mind, how do we account for the worn specimens?
  9. Nor me, but there's nothing about that one that suggests a proof to me.

With a somewhat confusing relationship to the seller: "my grandmother said son only sell when times a tough".

As long as they don't let the public decide, or he'll be Kingy McKingface.

    Stuff to Make Us Laugh

At what point do you start to think "it's getting a bit narrow down here"? Lynton / Lynmouth on Sunday.
  14. I was looking at the bit sticking out of the end of the 5 which appears to match this one: http://www.londoncoins.co.uk/?page=Pastresults&auc=146&searchlot=2317&searchtype=2 I can't see the diagonal on that one either.
  15. I would be inclined to say yes.
  16. Do you know what book VS is referring to Will? It’s not one I’m familiar with.
  17. The best reference I can think of is Charles Clay’s “Currency of the Isle of Man FROM ITS EARLIEST APPEARANCE TO ITS ASSIMILATION WITH, THE BRITISH COINAGE IN 1840; WITH THE Laws and other Circumstances connected with its History” Happily this is available for no money: http://www.isle-of-man.com/manxnotebook/manxsoc/msvol17/index.htm#contents Mal’s IOM site is also very useful: https://sites.google.com/site/malsiom/home-1?authuser=0 For coins only, Pridmore’s ”The Coins of the British Commonwealth of Nations to the end of the reign of George VI 1952 - Part 1: European Territories” should also prove useful.
  18. Welcome to the forum David. Great piece - I can't see it mentioned by either Pridmore or McCammon. Was there anything else as interesting in the collection?

    Olympic 50ps

Afternoon all, I feel like I'm getting close with my Olympic 50p collection, so thought it might be time to ask for some help. I still need 5: aquatics, athletics, badminton, basketball, shooting, triathlon, weightlifting & wrestling. If anyone has any of these lying about that they'd let me have for 50p each then I'd be delighted. I can't bring myself to pay more than 50p for a 50p, although I will happily swap if I've got something you might want, although that's unlikely. I've got a nice squirrel if that helps. Cheers, MBE

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

Nah, it's ok. Who would fake that? I think it's just a combination of deceptive photography, probable cleaning and blatant lies about the grade. Apart from that it's great.
