I thought it was a sovereign.

Is there any explanation for the popularity of Russian coins? The coppers always seem to go for good money and I want a nice polushka without paying a bleedin' fortune for it.
-
Good luck with that, I can't even play the triangle.

Doesn't someone on this forum have links to ebay? I'm sure I remember someone saying that they would have an auction taken down or words to that effect. Can't quite remember who, and they may have just been referring to reporting an auction listing.

Nothing strange about that Dave, I think that often, especially with foreign coins. "How on earth did that get to be with me?"

London Coins June Auction
mrbadexample replied to jaggy's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I took the lot to LCA at the Midland fair today, and met Semra. She had no issues taking the lot back, just said they'd have to check their records before sending a refund cheque out. So far so good. -
Dave, slabbed coins have been sent to a grading company, authenticated and graded so you should know that they are not fake and their condition has been assessed. The grading company, in this case CGS, then enclose the coin in a plastic "slab" to ensure the coin remains undamaged, unhandled, and the condition does not therefore change.

If you collected them from circulation then all is not lost Dave. Keep your eyes open for replacements then spend the ones you've cleaned. It'll take a little time but hopefully no expense.

Exactly. Now I get to test Semra's legendary customer service skills. Oh joy. -
London Coins June Auction
mrbadexample replied to jaggy's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Well here's my chance to test that. I bought lot 1703 at the June auction. Bit of a punt as no photos, but this is the "11 leaf" 1797 penny they sent me: -
Model Pennies and forum help.
mrbadexample replied to PWA 1967's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I did have a bid on one of those model pennies in the Copthorne Pete, lot 221. Outbid as usual but they didn't seem to be so scarce that I wouldn't see another. Some interesting ones there though, I'd quite like one. -

Mind you, with your legendary spelling you probably thought it was correct. -
Can't blame you there mate. Troublesome, by the sound of it.
-
Pete, at times you're a true gent. Just not when negotiating with me. Hat off.
-
Now you are. You won't make that mistake again, so if nothing else you've bought some experience. Don't give up, keep it as a reminder to take good care with whatever you buy. As TomGoodheart says, we've all done it.
-
How long ago did you buy it? Do you still have time to return it?

Penny Acquisition of the week
mrbadexample replied to Paulus's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Don't think I've seen one that well struck before. -
Can you post a picture of the obverse please?

The Copthorne collection of pennies
mrbadexample replied to PWA 1967's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
My word. And to think I fretted over lot 3. I hope they're as good as they look SS. -
Pete, I want EVERYTHING! But might have to wait until I see what happened at the LCA before I commit. It's a nice coin.
-
Pete what normally happens is you get no replies for the first couple of hours. Then you get impatient and drop the price a tenner. With a face like this: Then someone else (Jon, Non, you're both guilty here ) buys it before I notice it's reduced. So if you get fed up waiting and reduce it a tenner, can I be first this time please? Ta very much, Jon

Pleased with this one.

Is this a lamination error or just PMD
mrbadexample replied to bagerap's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I like it. Speaks of a very short time in circulation before someone thought "I'm keeping that."
