This is what bugs me... :-< I know it is very fairly priced... and I am tempted to buy it to fill a space in my date run... but why spoil the sale by claiming this coin is VF... it is so clearly poor or good ... VG at a push for some. I don't mind buying it for £2, £3 or £4 even and it will fill a hole in the folder... but to actually claim it is of VF condition - I cannot believe the seller here doesn't know that this coin is far from Fine let alone VF. The page advertises it as VF 4 or 5 times in the spiel. Makes me very cynical. As I said - I might buy it anyway to fill a gap. I need 1852 also. The guy is either an idiot for thinking the grade VF or a con man for false advertising. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Q-Victoria-Farthing-1851-VF-good-example-of-this-coin/142722984348?hash=item213af3e99c:g:ajMAAOSw8K5aqrm8

He has a sense of humor though! :-) this is his description:- sounds legit enough, lol. " He we have a delightful James I Silver Hammered Half Groat " Love Token " with hole centred. These were folded in to a " S " shape and given as a token of love in this period."

This just made me laugh... I really don't know how you can tell what it is. It is only 99p though. lol. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/James-I-Silver-Hammered-Half-Groat-Love-Token-With-Centred-Hole/152931223980?hash=item239b6949ac:g:l3oAAOSwor1aZGO6

I think that the wrestling one is generally scarcer - I need that one too. :-)

Price guide discrepancy for 1696 sixpence?

Thanks. I use the NGC site a lot for world coins as it is convenient and easy to search, but it does throw up some odd prices sometimes. -
Price guide discrepancy for 1696 sixpence?
DrP posted a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I was looking up some prices at a couple of sites on line for a 1696 William iii sixpence. NGC coin guide suggests for 2 different busts in VG prices of £50 to £150, £200 to £900 VF and £650 to £1800 XF40 (EF?). Whereas on the British coin price guide website it lists more varieties, all ranging from £35 to £60 in Fine, £90 to £250 VF and £350 to £550 EF. I understand the different varieties being valued at different prices due to rarity and different guides giving different values as they are just guides, but there is a wide gap between the estimated values given at each site. Any clues as to which is closer to the general value? Thanks. Maybe I should be using a different site. Recommendations would be welcome. I like the one I use for British coins, but maybe I need a better one for world coins. Any opinions on NGC? -
Worth it's weight in copper. I don't usually throw anything away.... but where do you draw the line? Apart from the 1860 date it is a blank copper disk nearly. :-(

The duty from the USA is a killer for me too. I would buy more fossils and coins from there, but the duty and vat and postage just makes it too dear. I don't like the in your face MEGA AWESOME UNCIRCULATED SILVER AND GOLD COIN HOUSE CLEARANCE SALE deals that get advertised... you think you are going to get a chest full of silver dollars and you get a handful of dimes, lol. You have to read the small print. Wouldn't be so bad... proof dimes are lovely, but with the duty, vat, postage they are expensive.
-
Somehow - hearing this from someone I have never met on a coin site DOES make me feel better for not buying them - thank you! :-)
-
Yea - I saw that gate - very funny. I think UKstu hit the price about right... tenner max. Maybe someone would pay £12 at a coin fair if they needed the Britol mint in particular to go with others in a set they were building or something... I'd stick a tenner on it and take offers. ;-)
-
I think I have one in similar condition to that listed... it came with a job lot of scrappy and damaged random silver hammered coins. Fills a gap and at an average of about £2.00 per coin I was quite pleased... wouldn't pay £30 quid for it though.... maybe I would for your VF version, lol, but I don't need it that badly, I am happy with my filler.
-
What would you say that Bristol mint coin is worth in this condition.... a tenner give or take?
-
I nearly bid on these in case any of the silver coins were not fake. Talking to the seller I was not convinced. He was claiming a total lack of knowledge of any of the coins... (but went quiet when I suggested weighing them) - If the silver coins in the pic are real then someone got a massive bargain... the 1731 8 Reals piece would be over £700 in this condition alone... I am pretty sure it looks too good to be true.... I told him the coins were worth hundreds if not fake and he feigned surprise and just said that someone would get a bargain then... hmm. not for me this month... If I though they were genuine I'd have bet a load. What makes me think that he KNOWS they are fakes is that I offered to pay a lot more than the winning bid if he would agree to refund the money if they turned out to be fake. He just went quiet again. Why would you take £50 for a lot of coins that someone had offered you a couple of hundred for if you didn't know? If they are real then wow - amazing coins for the money (I'm talking about the 5 silver coins here, not the 1953 set or the coin no one can see). I would have loved these coins for this price if they were real! :-) Surely others would have bid for these if anyone at all thought they were real. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/job-lot-old-coins/232656038012?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649 PS - I nearly took a punt just in case! Probably good that I didn't,... I get sucked in far to often with fake coins that look too good to be true.
-
no XF means ex F... i.e. it used to be Fine. lol :-)
-
Yea - you are looking at £9 to £15 for those 46 and 49 dates. Regarding the 10p - I assume you are talking the brass ones... the silver ones go for a pound whatever the condition or date.... if you DO mean the silver ones are 10 p then I'll take all you have at that price! lol ;-)
-
PS - the coin price guides are just that... guides... if you chuck the coins on e-bay you may get more or less for them depending on the whims of the people bidding. I hope that helps. All the best, Dr P.

The half crown and the 3 pence which are pre 1947 are 50% silver and have a scrap silver value. Otherwise, as with any coin, they are a piece of history and worth keeping for interest sake if you are into that sort of thing. There are lists of prices for coins, which mainly depend upon the grade of the coin and how many were minted and what it is made of, such as this one...( http://british-coin-price-guide.homelinux.com/OnePenny-Coin-Price-Guide.htm ) or the NGC website, which will tell you that your 1940 3d would be worth around £10.00 in mint condition, around £3.00 in Extra Fine. I think the scrap value for a 3 d is way under 50 p... but people do pay around £1.00 for them as items of interest (some still put them in christmas puddings and things). The silver half crown will value will vary with scrap silver value and people pay different prices for them.... I think they are worth around £3.50 or so (sorry - was too lazy to work out the exact price based on today's silver price)... depending on the silver value on the day.

Just A Thought For Newcomers!
DrP replied to Coinery's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Wow - I didn't see that until you mentioned it... first glance I thought it was a piece of squashed rabbit poo. But I see the bust and see what you mean now about Vespasian. Maybe too worn to tell, but I see where you are coming from. . -
lol - I too had noticed it had been reduced from £50k to £8k over the holidays.... surely it isn't real at that price? It has some odd wear on the patina on the heads side.... but I am not an expert.....
-
OK - I've seen your other threads and posts now, I see you are upset by being sold a fake coin. I bought a couple last year - one was listed as a detecting find and put with some other junk. It was well noticeable and the only reason to but the lot, but it was fake, and I guess there was no quibbling as it was a mixed lot of junk and nothing was claimed as real or fake.... but it was clearly there as bait to sell the rest of the junk. The other one was a fake gold coin. :-( but it wasn't from the UK.
-
Yea, what happened? sounds like you had an incident or an argument with one.
-
I have an a few uncirculated puddle duck 50ps. The one that was left on the side has toning on it now and the ones in kept in packets are still normal colour.
-
Could it just be toning due to atmospheric conditions of storage? Coins can tone differently if kept in different places, no?

Tried to post a coupe of tracks - came up with the error - FORBIDDEN! lol. I guess Jazz isn't for everyone. lol.
