Hi Larry, Thank you for the images of your “deposit” just above the lighthouse on you 1879 pennies. As you say it is amazing that no one has come forward with this ‘anomaly’ before now. It certainly seems to be a constant as you have 6 examples of this variety. I presume that it is on the commoner (M + k) variety. If so it could probably be recorded as BP 1879 Bh – (M + k) – With possible small piece of grit, metal filing, etc. got trapped on the reverse striking die leaving a small indent when it fell out that got transferred on the blank (coin) being struck and subsequent 1879 coins being struck. So far, it appears that about 7 examples are known in various grades from Poor to VF.

Perhaps you might want to add it to your rare dot "varieties" I certainly think (although I am biased please note) it should be added

I have presented the specimens of this penny to M Goulby and he agrees that it should be considered as an interesting example of another "dot type" I think there may be about 7 examples now.

1923 Specimen Strike Half Penny
DrLarry replied to Patrick2023's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
it might be easier to set it free from its plastic tomb and take a picture , the poor thing just might be suffering from plastic entombment syndrome . Most of us set our canaries free , but I suppose when there is a question of its "label" you could always sell it to an American who will accept with reverence anything written on a label. -

Yes I did start off with sets and boxes but then it just grew organically. Ironically I did not want to start with the most obvious lauer British as Rogers did in his book. Really a website should be the best option but I would not know how to grow and manage it. I think the field is lacking a good update and I know Kai was thinking of writing it for Galata books.

I am excited to hear you have so many of the onions I would love to see them side by side too. I have been trying to collect them but I suspect I shall not now continue. My collection is too broad a church and eventually have to decide what I can and can't collect. I'm happy there are some full sets around . Amazing really that they must have once been quite common in schools.

I am still somewhat surprised that I have a piedfort proof kew gardens 50p with a great sliver of silver sticking off the edge it is not as if it is microscopic being about 4 mm long and 1 mm high. I am going to assume it is an error minting and so may be more valuable , but as more and more mistakes are made perhaps I am assuming wrongly.

Does anyone know who it was who purchased that S G Onions 3 Fourpence make a shilling token last night. It sold for an extraordinary price £103 . I thought I was being generous at £25 LOL but yes it is a rare one, unseen by Rogers ,. If it is you Kai please post a picture

could you post an image of the normal reverse for comparison ? -
the magic combination would surely make anyone think twice, 0 feedback and the word "rare"

I am not sure it seems to be on all of them something has been done at least with 3 errors I think perhaps my thought something put on backwards or rotated . It still has me confused after 5 years 😅
-
Yes the 4th is the same by mistake
-
I thought I had two others but seems I only have 3 the 4th seems to have been marked up wrong which might man it is in another envelope or it may be that one is still in the US . Whether or not these new images help I am not sure but there are the three examples one about EF one VF and the other F . Personally I cannot make any sense of some of the protrusions above unless a letter has been rotated but even then some of the angles seem just to be "wrong" and correspond to nothing else nor the piece that comes out from the central section of the E . I have only ever thought of it as an understruck R with the weight on the upper section because there is no negative space in the lower section to see if it is an R or a B ... Obviously there is a lot going on and it is a busy error ! as far as I am aware 5 maybe are known one was listed in a London coins sale I believe prior to my asking the forum back in 2018
