1795 Pattern Halfpenny images required
DrLarry replied to Rob's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I do have one of the 1797 patterns for the half penny however I think the die must have been rusty I am sure you already have this one but let me know. -
welcome, it sounds bizarre to tell you to do this.... but go onto the chinese website call aliexpress and do a search for british coins they are all counterfeit some to a high standard and look at them very closely. In fact I buy them on purpose to have a reference set they are a few dollars each most. Contemporary counterfeits are a different matter and are a part of coin history and also enjoyable to collect. They have become very sly in the last year and have started minting 1902 crows with the edge made of silver they cost £40-50 but [people will try to flog the rubbish on ebay and I think this is one of the main starting points for any new collector....KNOW THE FULL EXTENT OF THE FAKES. there are just some coins I won't collect anymore and sadly these rubbish things are entering the system through those with little knowledge ....fakes are bane of a collectors life. I had intended to make a website showing all the fakes but dont get the time...there are victorian half crowns the crowns the George the III crowns and half crowns and the shillings along with a whole spectrum of other coins and as a novice it is hard to tell. always be very aware of a coin with incredible rainbow toning its likely to be painted on. just be careful and buy yourself some cheap scales and if you get any silver or copper find the accurate weight and weigh your coins, they usually get this bit wrong, although you have to still be very careful. I have only been collecting three years and have discovered some wonderful things and coins helped me recover a lot from treatments as they help focus the mind. Enjoy it Larry

yes I think they do however if I see them going cheap in various places around the world who follow the guide price in SPINK for the sets they can sell for a lot more over here so it makes some profit for the charity. I can usually make a couple of hundred profit for them that way. I think any proof error getting through is a rare thing though, the fact that this is such a profound failure on each of the angles even more so. I would think there may have been a jump and restamp error which has caught the edges some of the metal is folded down along the edges but one piece sits very high.

I have had a few of these 2009 Family silver sets this one is #1295 of 1500 I am sure all the real coin collectors will find this a little boring and I only ask your advice because I have donated it to the charity and would like some idea of the rarity as a failure in the Royal mint not to have noticed 6 large pieces of silver on each of the edges. The metal twists down the side so much so that the coin will not ever sit in the capsule. It is sitting high and one slice of the silver is cutting into the plastic on the underside. the weight for the silver proof is correct and all aspects of the coin are as they should be for the silver proofs except this. It must be very unusual to have struck it wrong, examined it , quality controlled it, then carefully placed it in the capsule where is doesn't even sit flush.

I have several beautiful 1860's which show multiple errors, although I hesitate to call them errors. there is not as you would expect movement in the legend because many of the letters are completely different forms with curly bases and about 10% smaller than the overstamped larger letters. Throughout the same position of the E and the N's shift laterally. The P E N N Y are all originally smaller letters. On the obverse of these pennies all the lettering is are old curly base types and again smaller. The bases of the T in Victoria is a completely different size on one i would say by 50%. I have half a dozen that show the same errors can you please let me know if these are normal for this OBV and REV

Coin Conservation / Restoration. Is it cleaning?
DrLarry replied to markflorida's topic in Free for all
I should like to wade in here. I have found in the last 2 years all the rare overprints and number changes in just two years of collecting and I would say 100% that the reason for this is the careful removal of muck within the legend and date. In fact I think many things still yet to be found exist under said muck and in fearing this word cleaning (for which personally I would say is chemical or physical abrasion or alteration) we are left with a host of problems which might deter us from understanding a little more about the minting history or process. I believe for myself a coin can helps me understand social history and is a canvas/stage on which some interesting dramas tell us a little about the people and human errors. Careful use of water cotton buds and a carefully softened tooth pic can and have for me at least led to quite a few personal discoveries. If they one day become useful discoveries is yet to be seen, but the 1861 Z over N variety would never have been found without a tooth pic so I suppose we all make our choices. But then again the value of a coin is of little interest to me I do my research then give the coins away.- 20 replies

1860 Overstruck E in PENNY? or wishfull thinking...
DrLarry replied to Rick2020's topic in Confirmed unlisted Varieties.
Yes I have found a few where the smaller date exists under the larger ones- 13 replies

ok thanks , so if the letters are of a different type set with curly bases similar to the bases on the half penny and smaller they are just still unimportant. I had thought perhaps they are illustrative of an earlier layout of the lettering which had been scraped and replaced with the larger letters. yes I have a few N over N's in both of the PENNY n's I will keep looking I think I have a B over an R in the 1860 I will verify it and let you know

1860 Overstruck E in PENNY? or wishfull thinking...
DrLarry replied to Rick2020's topic in Confirmed unlisted Varieties.
here are some of the obverse letterings on these 1860s...oh it won't let me load the multiple obverse errors ...in fact every letter is a smaller curly base under the larger lettering I have always thought it pretty special- 13 replies

1860 Overstruck E in PENNY? or wishfull thinking...
DrLarry replied to Rick2020's topic in Confirmed unlisted Varieties.
I am not sure if this is relevant but in terms of the E being recut in the 1860 . It appears to occur in many specimens particular type which i have tried to show has the smaller E the base is the old curly lettering and the P and the N and N together with many smaller letters overprinted on the obverse. It seems to be linked with these old smaller letters rather than a shift in the legend during minting as the bases are often lower or higher and show no movement on the tops.- 13 replies

1879 Penny metal above lighthouse
DrLarry replied to DrLarry's topic in Confirmed unlisted Varieties.
Oh the interesting thing is than in other 79's there is a section which is raised as a mound and the scars of removal are clear and the scars correspond to the same shape. It suggests that the die has been ground down to remove this small shuttle. how did you rationalise its presence because presumably it results on a gouge in the die. Is this then accident or purpose. It is uncanny the resemblance to the tops of the thin light houses ( I stray into dangerous territory here LOL) -
I have been studying the bronze series for a few years under the microscope and would ask if anyone else has one of the the following in their collection: 1879 REV J penny large metal addition above the lighthouse. No sign of compression or metal distortion. Additional observation in subsequent examples of the 1879 penny show a raised mound and removal scars matching the form of the metal found on specimen A. The metal is at its highest 1 mm off the surface rises in the middle. defined edge and coincidentally seems to match reverse H lighthouse top. It is an intriguing metal addition and I would ask if anyone has any evidence in 1879 pennies of anything similar. In 3D visualisation of the anomaly there is no strike to any of the metal in the vicinity which could cause a ripple in the metal. Note that the metals medial apex would shift anything slightly to the left of the present light house REV J all other features so far remain the same for this die type, although I have to look in more detail.

New 1861 penny variety? F33 N over inverted N in ONE
DrLarry replied to jelida's topic in Confirmed unlisted Varieties.
hello Jerry I hope you are getting much better I had not realised until today you were unwell. I too went down with pneumonia which has stopped me searching . I have just listed a new discussion on the 1879 penny I have with a large metal addition above the lighthouse. I will just show the dramatic stuff in the hope we may better understand some of the history. Be well and best wishes -
