Best basic identifier for voided cross pennies?

Recommended Posts

I think I have to turn my attention to the collection of over a hundred voided cross pennies, purchased mostly in the nineties by my mother, gifted to me. I think it is well worth building on this, and I would like advice regarding appropriate literature. I have bought 'The Brussels Hoard' (obviously not all of it) and I have North and Spink. I really need a straightforward and portable reference when out at the fairs to pin down possible purchases; is Christopher Wren's book any good, or are there other recommendations? Big pictures definitely an asset!

There are a few books which are helpful for identification, but the quid pro quo is their weight which iincreases in line with the complexity of the subject. Brussels hoard, Mass sylloge, or any one of the numerous BNJ articles on restricted sections, one way or another you are going to have to carry around a volume or two if you want to identify the variants within the main classes. TBH Spink isn't that bad given you are probably going to have it with you for other references. Anyway, a parcel of 100 should ensure you are fully up to speed on a few classes, which means that you will know what not to buy. Just as important as looking for specifics, is knowing what you have and avoiding them too.

True, I have my mothers old notebooks, she listed coins as she bought them, type , price, source, and gave them a collection number. I am going to have to collate this into a searchable list by type, mint and moneyer in the first instance.

My gripe with Spink is the size of the pictures, given that they hardly improve under the magnifier.

I agree Rod's information on the site is very user friendly and well worth a look for learning identification methodology

No-one seems to use this.

I can highly recommend it. You can even follow the addendums  on each category to extend the classification.
