An unusual 1860 Copper Penny

Spotted this in the upcoming Lockdale's auction. 

1860 penny

Whoever wins it will likely end up paying far less than it's consignor.

I think they have that one attributed wrong...that looks like the real thing to me. It has the clash marks under Victoria's chin, and the angled scratch mark under the bun. The way the 6 is cut on the bottom is typical of some of the 1860's! Someone may get a bargain!

Agree with Bob. It looks like a classic 1860/59 to me. They mostly all look pretty much like that.

I agree, which makes the estimated price out by a factor of at least 10 and probably rather more.

thing is though do you bid the true value with that description, you have no comebacks at all

 

Coin will probably be pulled before the auction for proper checking

It was worth about £1k without anyone mentioning it but now its been on here could bring closer to £1700.

Its right and again missed by the auctioneer but i gaurantee the estimate and description will change

Definitely the real thing, and surprising that Lockdales make this mistake. Attached pictures for reference, obverse with usual markings as noted by other members and doubled (die clash) ribbons, again always present............ date close up picture with same protrusions (highlighted in red) always seen and clearly also on the Lockdales piece.

The bottom of the 6 is broken on some examples, and fully formed on others. I have one of each. I think the fully formed 6 is harder to obtain.

Agreed Bob - the majority do indeed appear to have the broken 6.
