1862 Penny with missing Characters

Recommended Posts

I got this Penny off of ebay...just because it looked so unusual. The seller said it had been cleaned, but the "N" and most of the "O" are missing. It doesn't look like it has been ground down, but I don't know how it would wear this way without some "extra" help!  Any ideas?

The only thing I can assume is maybe an extremely worn die. Maybe at one time the letters were faintly visible, but have since worn away completely, leaving just the normally struck letters visible. Of course, the Y of PENNY is also absent.

Filled die?

This is from Colin's About Farthings site...

[H] Filled Dies - Occur when the recessed areas become filled with debris. the debris can be grease, pieces from previous planchets, or any other foreign body. This error generally affects the lettering and datal figures, giving the appearance that a letter or number is missing. This error can also affect other areas in extreme circumstances.
