Think its determined by what your selling ,this will determin IMO weather the costs involved are worthwhile.

In some instances bigger the audiences means larger fees and doubt Spink would be negotiable 

I Know someone who this year bought a large penny collection outright privately and just took everything (no fees) so a number of options.

Depends if you want to sell the collection in one go and how large it is , as maybe worth splitting up.

Sell some privately and see whats left maybe .

As a buyer Neils was definately the best option .

Better than L C A for example as you know whether or not you have been outbid before the end of the auction. With other auctions, unless you are there ion the day, actually in attendance, you won't know. Far better for the on line bidder.

One thing that really p***** me off with the last LCA auction was that I put a high bid on one coin as my maximum, it was way over the higher estimate, and because it was via email and I wasn't in the room they just opened the bidding with my maximum and of course that was the hammer price. Even though it states on their website;

"...this does not mean that you will pay the maximum, you will pay the next bidding step up from the under bidder." and "Bidders will supply their maximum level and London Coins will execute this instruction at the sale, lots may be obtained for less than the maximum bid."

Needless to say, that wasn't how the CC auction went.

IMO that is just wrong on the part of LCA and would really irk me.Maybe it was a slip on part of the auctioneer or was it just a cynical cover up of their low estimate?

Welcome to the club, LCA soured me quite a bit in this same way several years ago and has dissuaded a lot of bidding from me. This IMO is a very poor business motto that reminds me of what they try a lot on the East Coast of the USA - burn the customer up front for as much as possible and damn the long term consequences. Not to name names but Stack's in the USA does this same type of thing...

I still bid but is quite irritating pushing me to find a rep for auctions.

Lucky I didn't put an even higher bid. I only knew they opened with it because there were members from here that were in the room at the time.

I would've emailed querying it, but we all know I either wouldn't have gotten a response or probably told to bugger off.

At least I got a free club membership from it I suppose. Where do we meet to malign LCA?

Laurie Bamford told me several years ago that they were prone to doing this but yet I've won lots with less than my maximum so I'm not sure exactly how it works. It might be just possible that there were several postal bids that just happened to climax at your maximum bid and that's why they opened the bidding at that level. That would be genuine if a little coincidental.

That could be the case, although my maximum was over what it is worth, at least in my opinion. It was the only lot I wanted so was happy to pay over the odds as I've only seen perhaps one other like it.

I couldn't see anyone else going as high as I went.

Anyway, lesson learnt. Either attend personally, low bid, or no bid

A photo of my acquisition with my photo and the Auction photo. Think I still have lots to learn with capturing all the detail. There is loads of lustre, my image is a bit more mat but closer to the real colour.
