Recommended Posts

I have a coin with Madeirensis inscribed on it and the date is 1842 is it just the same as a Portugal ten Reis coin.

Thanks Dave

When you say inscribed, do you mean it appears to be done after the coin was first struck? No coins were specifically minted for the Azores until the following year, 1843. Yours may be a countermark to show that it was coinage for the islands. Portuguese colonial coins are frequently marked and reused in other parts of the empire.

The Portuguese coppers for Maria II are similar but slightly different

Mainland portugal X reis coins are 31mm and weigh 12.75g and were minted in all years 1840-1847 and 1850-1853 though the 1853 was issued solely for Mozambique

Madeira X reis coins are 33mm and weigh 12.8g and were minted 1842, 1850 & 1852 - the 1850 is very rare. Also a XX reis 36mm. 25.5g for 1843

Azores 10 Reis coins are 30mm and weigh 6.4g - minted in 1842-3 and a 20 reis  35mm, 14.5g for 1843

Thank you David (belated Happy Birthday BTW) I confused the Madeiras with the Azores.
