90% certain that it's not a proof, weak striking around teeth, waves and Britannia's foot. I always look at the rim first because proofs have a very polished yet sharp rim. With veiled heads I've also noticed far more detail on Britannia's foot for instance the toes are clearly cut. http://www.londoncoins.co.uk/img.php?a=152&l=2458&f=r&s=l

Surely you'd think LCA can't get it wrong twice in a row or can they?

Maybe in some cases they're just accepting what the vendor says about the coin. Or, possibly, if there's any "provenance" which got it wrong initially, they're taking the lazy way out and not re-checking themselves.

That 1896 fetched £500 by the way - lot No 3193.

In defence of Londonn Coins, I have never had a problem with them. I bid by email, they are always recorded right, I always get a printed catalogue sent to me, their photos are excellent, my bids are executed properly and I often get my coins for less than my maximum, I call up an pay by phone and lots are always despatched as promised.

My only gripe is that they don't have online bidding.

I took the lot to LCA at the Midland fair today, and met Semra. She had no issues taking the lot back, just said they'd have to check their records before sending a refund cheque out. So far so good. :)

When I gave the lot back to Semra she said she was going on holiday and asked me to email her on or about the 21st to remind her about the return & refund.

I did so. She replied asking for my bank details and I have the refund showing today.

I am happy to say I have no complaints whatsoever with the service. :)
