Lining for coin cases

Recommended Posts

Hi All

Just got a couple of lovely large hinged boxes which I have decided to convert into coin cases. The coins will be in Quadrums but still want to make sure the material I use is coin safe. What material is best for lining. Are there any adhesives that I should avoid. Also do I need to treat the wood. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Brian

I guess the first thing to ask is what type of wood are they made from?

Its an MDF with veneer.

I don't think you need to worry about treating the wood if you're keeping the coins in quadrums. When you get round to it Brian, start a thread and post some pics while you're doing it, would be great to see it progress! :)

Is MDF safe to use? I though the glues used to bind it could potentially affect the coins. Is there anyone with more experience able to confirm this?

I cant see it making any difference in a quadrum ,they are airtight .

Some MDF contains formaldehyde that could possibly have an effect on silver.

What about British tradition....use mahogany or rosewood. You won't find MDF in a Morgan Plus. My cabinet for what its worth is handmade in the UK using reclaimed Victorian mahogany.IMO as important as my coins.

Lots of things to think about. Will keep looking into it before I commit fully. Want to do a good job if I do decide to make my own.

I'd worry about MDF leaching hydrocarbons and toning the coins, especially if it is new.

That said, we all like toned coins, so I guess it depends what the results look like. I guess it is a try it and see.

I know "not much help", sorry.

took a while but just finished the first box. The trays in them are just for show at the moment. The bottom section takes 3 trays with storrage at the back, will be placing a divider section later. The top hinged section takes 2 trays which I have trimmed down slightly. The whole thing is lined with black felt, including the base of the upper tray to prevent scratching or damage. It has given me a way to utilize the extra trays I already have. The coins will all be housed in caps within the trays. Maybe not to everyones taste but I like it.

Found my next project base. A bit more to do and a lot more traditional..... The Quadrum is to give an idea of scale.
