1937 Farthing

Quite a while back, I bought a 1937 farthing described as 'ABU'. Since then i have started to notice that it is starting to tone like that of a proof coin. I am now quite sure that this is a proof coin, but how can I be definate?

I think Chris would know if it were a proof. If he sold it as normal ABU, it will most probably be ABU - it could have been one of mine that I sold to him!

Yes, it may well have been Oli. And you're right, I would have called it a proof if it were one. Later bronze proofs are easy to distinguish (more so than some Victorian and earlier proofs).

JMD, you need a proof to act as a reference. I Have some 1970 proofs I think.

I have 1950 and 1951 proof farthings. The toning on this 1937 one is roughly the same as that on the 1950 and '51 i have...

But it's not really the toning to look out for. It's the fields, they must be completely reflective like a mirror. There should be no bloom or ghosting, just completely flat, completely reflective fields.

Just for me to know the difference of proof and non proof, I bought a US Proof set from 1986 and it costed me $20. I now can see the difference.

I as well bought a half penny from 1970 from Chris, that if I remember correctly is proof, there is a huge difference between them and non proof coins!
