Grade/Price

Recommended Posts

Hi I was looking at a coin on ebay and am curious what grade and value you would put on this coin. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Queen-Victoria-1884-Half-Crown-Very-Nice-Coin-/371667233163?hash=item568917e98b:g:NYoAAOSw-4BXcTEe

Im not necessarily buying it, its nearly finished anyway im just curious/trying to learn so I guess you could expect a bunch more of these from me aswell.

Any advice appreciated

Cheers

I wasnt being clever ... but the grade i doubt comes much worse.

I dont have a clue if its scarce.

If your learning and i am far from much better ,i suggest you buy the books and buy off reputable dealers.

Otherwise will cost you money and could end up with things you dont want.

Such as a box i have :)

Take your time .

Pete.

If your not sure what your buying ,dont bother.

You will end up with coins you dont want :)

Then you end up giving them away...Have a go on the correct score thread

Bit of interest.

IMO the coin is some where between fair and fine. If you think about how a coin would wear the high points will go first, hence the ear is nearly gone as well as the detail in the hair. There is still a little detail around the nose and eye but this is probably being protected by the lettering and the rim of the coin which will be slightly raised. The same goes for the reverse the high points will wear first, which you can guess at from the picture.

As to its worth the book is saying £20 for fine, but IMO the coin is below that grade.

I agree with Ian's grade assessment, Fair-Fine, reverse slightly better.

I would value the coin at precisely £19.

Fine, with unacceptable harsh cleaning that nets it a fair.

I'd say the Obverse is Fair, the Reverse Fine or near so.

None of the Vicky Young Head halfcrowns is very common but 1884 isn't particularly rare, there were nearly 1.6 million minted.  The commonest mintages are 1883 at just under 3 million and 1881 at about 2.3 million.

If you like the design, it might be worth looking to spend say £50-£75 on a nicer one, or perhaps spend the same £20 budget on say an 1887 Jubilee Head halfcrown?

As an example, I bought this 1885 halfcrown from an online dealer about a year ago for £66 delivered.  The seller graded it GVF, the coin is nice in hand.

Thanks everyone for the feedback and input, I think the main reason I was looking at the cheaper ones was just because I really wasnt sure what I was looking at and didnt want to make a decent sized mistake without really asking but going forward any interest ill post on here. Thanks again.
