Some really ridiculous eBay listings

Look at this:

1954 forged penny

Someone has altered the '6' in the date to a '5'! So if you want an 'authentic' 1954 penny, then you had better bid!

Yeah I'm sure it's a misstrike <_<

People change numbers in some penny, I can't remember the exact date, so that it resembles a 1933 penny. It could be 1937 I can't remember.

What would be the point of changing a 1937 one, wrong king for a start!

1935 is the date you are looking for.

Darn, I was trying to think of numbers that could be easily manipulated into a 3!

Penny

Looks like he needs two near impossible dates to complete his collection! He is either an amateur or a dreamer.....

He could have actually bought a penny with the money he has wasted in listing all of his adverts!

My dad said that he read an article the other day saying that most ungraded american coins being sold on Ebay.com are actually fake! The article even said how to make new coins look old and toned!

That is absolutely awful isn't it. That kind of language is what you'd expect to hear from Del Boy, although even he'd do a better job of not sounding so bloody awful.

Just when I thought the world couldn't get any more riduculous, and just after returning from a day trip with cheap petrol, and a quality meal for 2 with deserts for £7.73 in the Czech republic, you show me that and change the positive course of my day!

I wasn't able to locate it, but no doubt the Spink example was a proof.

No proofs were even made that year and I'm quite certain that they wouldn't get £250 anyway. What a silly little man.

Oli... No threepence proofs were struck for sale to the public that year, but the Spink example was likely a rare "proof of record".

Oli... No threepence proofs were struck for sale to the public that year, but the Spink example was likely a rare "proof of record".

Proofs have been struck for most British coins practically every year since about 1925.

Some years miss here and there, but for the most part by the 1930s onward there is a proof per year right upto 1970.

And the proofs go for very high prices infact £250 is a bit on the cheap side.

Oli...And thanks are due Sylvester as well for providing additional information on the "off-year" proofs. This may be somewhat off topic, but what series of coins are each of you currently collecting?

Well I was collecting farthings until I found verdigris on some other coins, so as a safeguard I sold all of them off to Chris. Now I don't know quite what to collect so I'm just waiting for something to catch my eye.

If you got verdigris quite easily, I suggest that you should think about collecting silver......victorian shillings are very nice! :D

Yes that's what I'm looking at. I was going to collect half sovereigns but thought again. Last night I posted something on here asking what grade you all thought a certain George IV coronation medal was in because I was going to bid for it. Nobody replied so I deleted the post but decided to bid anyway, up to my maximum of £40. However, I was still outbid.

If I didn't collect halfpennies, I would collect Vicky YH shillings, I might even start to collect them as well as halfpennies, they are wonderful and have massive eye-appeal!

Ah I was thinking of either buying some maundy money (Pre-Edward VII) or making up a set.

Making a set of your own could be much cheaper than buying one but make sure that all of the coins have matching toning.

I think Maundy money is an oft over looked area... infact i've just had an idea...

I always intended (but have wisely decided not to) to make one date set of coins for every monarch from Charles II to George V (Minus the copper)... the early gold hjust prooved too elusive and expensive.

But i am seeing alot of early milled Maundy stuff cropping up here and there and the later Milled stuff is available.

Just an idea i thought of throwing your way... how about one complete maundy set for each monarch from Chas II to Eliz II, (Actually Elizabeth II is probably going to be the tricky one!).

Four Charles coins, 4 James (and for once you have James coins that aren't too difficult to find), 4 WM, 4W3, 4 Annabels, 4 Geo I, 8 Geo II (Young & old... Did they ever use old?), 8 Geo III (early/late)... etc.

It would be quite something when you've done, and i do think it's achievable!

That's what I've been thinking but when you look, there's not many maundy oddments around, on the internet at least. I googled maundy money (look - predecimal is in the blurb!) and found quite a nice site with loads of bits and bobs but it didn't really look "proper", if you catch my drift. I'm a bit wary about purchasing anything because they don't have pictures - ut they do have a huge selection! The first set I'll try to assemble is probably a George III wire set.
