george 111 coin

i found this coin while digging foundations, it is bigger than a 1912 one penny and twice as thick.. On the front it say's britannia with the woman sat on the sheild.on the back it has george 111's picture with the wording GEORGIUS 111 D.G. RE? can't make out the last letter underneath the picture is the date 1806.

i'd like to know the last letter and what value the coin was, (ie;half penny, penny)

It'll be an X (for REX, the Latin for King)

If it's only slightly larger than a 1912 Penny and twice as thick, it's sure to be a penny (they were bigger then)

thanks for your time chris! found about 12 coins in all 4 six pence's, a couple of half pennys some pennys a german coin and a irish coin as well.

most were george IV

the site where i dug them out of hasnt been touched in forty years.

i've been told to soak them in vinegar? will that bring them up?

Vinegar will certainly not make them collectable! But the chances are they were ruined in the earth before you put them in vinegar.

What are the silver ones like? Usually silver does better than copper underground. It may be best that you take them out of the vinegar, rinse them and let me see pictures.

Correct me if I'm wrong please, but I've always known of this coin to be called

a 'Soho' Penny, coming after the Cartwheel of 1797 and minted in Soho....

Have got quite a few of them, but none of them collectable (Detector Finds)

Yes, lots of people call them that, although The 1797, 1799, 1806 and 1807 issues were all made in Soho (not Red Light District London, Soho in Birmingham).
