Queen's Beast(ly) Bargains

Gaccchhhhh! Have you a spare 8k in change laying around, and want a rare coin with 100 or so  mintage? The Royal Mint Have The Proof Bullion Queen's Beasts for you - a Five Ounce Gold Chunk is only 8k! Or Hockey Puck 10 Oz. Silvers at only 1/10 that price. Also, just in case you missed the bullion Lion 2016 issue of the same design, they can now be had with the 2017 date as well as a "newer" bullion with griffin which will also be dated 2017 & surely proof versions of that to follow with only another EIGHT Beasts to go!

Perhaps someone better at math than I can calculate how much a full set of all ten in both metals will run the "collector"?

And I have NO excuse as my mom is a retired English Professor!

Funny that back in the day at Nicosia Middle School in Cyprus I somehow did not get my knuckles rapped for such an error & been with me ever since. Well, made up for it as I got them attended to for other misdeeds.

I'd go with math's or plain simple mathematics.

I got the Queen's Lion 2016 - 2oz bullion coin. Its a real beauty. Cost me £43 inclusive of special delivery. Noticed the 1 ounce 2017 lion coin from the RM is priced at £85!!!!!! Mad.

Which is precisely what got me to look as I had bought the 2016 bullion at 44 USD incl. postage and the 2017 griffin bullion at 38.90 incl postage. These are beautiful prooflike coins with excellent strike and no issues at about 40% the price of the new RM bits....Worthwhile at the lower price I think.

Is the new 2017 2oz silver griffin yet avaible ? I've just noticed on the royal mint website the new 2017 BU sovereign identical as the 2016 except a very small shield,  located on the date's left , celebrating the 200th anniversary of the modern gold sovereign. They have created a new sovereign variety with a minimun effort.

You can pre order from various places, they will be out 12th Dec but shop around as they are more expensive on the RM website. The 2017 proof sovereign is much nicer and the George and Dragon design was only available on the proofs

I think it's disappointing that the 2017 bullion sovereign has not got the same reverse as the proof.  I didn't want the proof, but I did want that design as a bullion coin to accompany my (few) others, which include the 2002, 2005 and 2012 reverse designs.

I agree unfortunately this is the last years RM's policy , I think they want to make proof sovereigns more attractive... 2015 , 2016 and 2017

If they minted the proof as they are doing with the bullion then the coin wouldn't be so special and their point was that it was a 200th anniversary coin, got my Griffin this week and i'm trying to get the complete series in silver bullion, the gold proof 1/4oz along with the gold bullion and 1oz proof in silver

How big is that 2oz silver proof?  Must be enormous!

I still think it's a shame that the bullion sovereign isn't the same design as the proof, but hey ho.  I don't think the proof design has been different from the bullion sovereign coin in all other years when both types were minted since 1817, but I may well be wrong?

I'm interested in the 1oz gold bullion coins from the Royal Mint, I like the Britannia and the Lunar Year coins too.  From other mints I like the Maple and the Kangaroo.

Any advice about where best to buy from (UK buyer, buying in GBP)?  I've looked at Royal Mint Bullion and Bullion By Post, which seem reasonably competitive (about 5 or 6% over spot) but are there better options out there?

Gold bullion, well, i recently picked up the 1/4oz gold Griffin at a fairly decent price, i bought 2, one for me and one for a friend of mine. If you are interested in something specific i'll see what i can find around here and can compare with you. The silver is

Weight 62.42g

These are very similar to pieforts, which is what they appear to be. And very "proofy" as well. In other words, sim to size of the 1 oz Britannias in size but twice the thickness.

Thanks Gents.

I'd never really looked into bullion coins other than sovereigns until recently.  The sovereigns I have were either won in races, or bought to be enjoyed as coins (I bought the 2002 and 2012 bullion sovereigns about 16 months ago).

With the gold price having fallen a bit since the post-brexit surge I'm considering buying some gold bullion over the next few months (and not looking at it as a short term investment, more an alternative store of value) and the coins look decent value as a way in, with the added bonus of being interesting in their own right.  If the gold price drops a few percentage points in sterling terms in the first half of 2017 I will probably take the plunge!

I'm not so sure gold will fall that much to be honest, once Donald.J gets into power all hell is going to break loose. I think i could probably help you find a few bits @Stuntman at good prices, especially the QB 1/4oz. The other thing i'd mention is try and diversify, ok a Sovereign is world known, but it's also .916 gold, to take advantage of the tax free when selling on the coin must be .995 - .999 fine. The China pandas and Australian Lunars are a good alternative and are 999.9 fine gold, the queens beast bullion is also 999.9 fine, 1/4oz are a manageable price.

As a starter, here are bullion mintages for the Lunar series. (http://www.perthmint.com.au/investment-bullion-bars-and-coins-mintages.aspx) Not quite into the British Lunar series, somehow it has to much of a modern feel for me, i'll post a picture of an Aussie one and a British one and you can compare

Cheers, many thanks.  I was aware of the 0.995 to 0.999 rule, definitely important to remember and I will certainly be buying coins of that fineness.

Do you think the mintages of bullion coins have any impact on their resale price?  My line of thinking is not, and therefore I would just choose the coins with designs I preferred most, and at acceptable buying price.  I'd like a bit of diversity - a Britannia, a Lunar Year coin, an Australian Kangaroo, a Canadian Maple and an Austrian Philharmonic would be nice!

.

Tricky one on the gold price, especially given that the sterling price is also tied to the GBP/USD movement.  I'd say there are factors which could influence the price in either direction in the short term at the moment, hence my wish/hope to get in at a slightly lower point.  I agree with your sentiment on Trump!
