Fake Sovereign ?

Recommended Posts

I saw this listing as a popup on Google https://www.sterlingcurrency.com.au/items/1910-sydney-mint-sovereign-unc-pcgs-ms62. Looking  at the listing, firstly the obverse.

I was not impressed with the grading which was described as PCGS MS62. There seemed to be some wear or perhaps a light strike with bag marks on the rim of the king's ear. However it was the reverse that really attracted my attention. The strike was terrible and was similar to one of the examples in the Chard rouges' gallery https://goldsovereigns.co.uk/fakes.html,

In my opinion this example has a high probability of being a fake and perhaps an example of when a coin is TPGed it receives less scrutiny than normal.

PS looking at the PCGS photo it is very different to the photo taken by Sterling and Currency.

I don't know if it's a fake - the strike is bad I agree but if you look at the image on Chard's at https://goldsovereigns.co.uk/1910sovereign.html it's not perfect either.

It definitely appears to be a different coin to the PCGS photo though (http://www.pcgs.com/cert/31642079). St George's visor is better defined is the PCGS image and the rim nick just before OMN is missing. The PCGS images also show a rim nick between the R and E of REX which isn't in the other image.

It certainly does appear to be a different coin. I was trying to focus on a point on the coin that could be identified as the same or not and found a rim nick by the dragons paw at around 4 o'clock which doesn't appear on the PCGS picture yet is on the sellers. Check the images

In any case, I've bought from him before without any trouble - if you're interested in the coin I'm sure an email will sort it out. More than likely the listing was copied without updating the link.
