Just how many coins do you all have, and how do you store and display them?

I'm guessing that some of the modern (to me the last 200 years is VERY modern!) collections must run into hundreds of coins?

All in all about 60-70 coins. I tend to keep the number down. Plus another hundred or so low grade coins kept simply because they are silver and i like hoarding them and throwing them around.

Cabinet for the best, Silver Jar for the silver.

somewhere in the vicinity of 3500 coins, but haven't gotten an accurate count in quite a while. and that is down from the almost 9000 that I did have, before I "refined" my collection last year. I imagine that another re-structuring will happen sometime this year, but that will probably only eliminate another 1000 or so.

I guess my collection is like Kuhli's... I collect Britain becuase I started by picking out shillings and florins from my change. I collect Germany because I'm half German. I collect Scandinavia because I appreciate the modesty of their designs.

As for the rest, I think of my collection as an illustrated history of the world. It's supposed to be a type collection but I can't resist a bargain (and with world coins you can find many bargains!), so I will need to go through some refinement phases too as I get it all sorted and catalogued.

It's mostly in albums except for some special coins which are in my own hand made trays. I don't like the commercial trays and cabinets because you can't rearrange the coins in a flexible way... you're stuck with the compartments they give you.

Maybe I'll write to each of Chris' tray suppliers with the suggestion for selling the compartments in strips, where (say) four strips fit in a tray and you can buy strips for different sized coins (e.g. 4 large, 7 medium, 14 small on two rows), basically mimicing the current album page technology.

Well, I have around 150 different bank notes and around 1600-2000 coins.

I collect anything that I can afford and I don't have already. But latetely I am considering my options as it is becoming too big.

My collection is massive....together with trays, albums accessories and books I'm gradually taking over a large part of the dining room.

Over the years people have given me various different coins and I have added to these ie Victorian crowns and double florins but deep down I'm a copper man.

I still remember the thrill of relations saving their victorian change for me.

I never refused any and I must confess a lot of Vikkie pennies in less than fine were spent at the local sweet shop.

I'm a gold man at heart, but i can't afford it so i default to silver.

Copper has it's allure but it's either full lustre or no lustre. Verdigris is what worries me about copper.

I like tin farthings too. Can never have too much tin.

I would like to like gold!! Its a beautiful tarnish free metal.

I've just got a 1910 1/2 sovereign and a 1787 1/2 guinea.

A plan is to go big time on a Hammered Gold...I was watching a James 1 Laurel the other day and the bid finger started to twitch.

I think I will play safe though and buy through a dealer take my time/research and enjoy the experience!!!!!

The sight of some dealers tables at coin fairs springs to mind.

Still.... ;) if a Anne 1/4d was winking at me amongst the gold.....I would have a big time problem.

I wouldn't, not if they were half guineas... i love half guineas, a much nicer size than the full ones.

Now if it was a row of half guineas and an EF+ William and Mary 1694 sixpence then i might have trouble. :D

I would get into my time machine (with the William and Mary 6d)....and use it to buy a Ye Olde Pint from the village Inn.

I would insist all the change was in farthings...I reckon 23 of them :D ......imagine a bar job in those days? They didn't realise how lucky they were.

I got quarter of one, but it's a bit substandard.

Hammered gold is a weakness of mine.

I'm relying on memory here, but the half crowns must now be into triple figures, or which about 90 are a collection, the rest leftovers from upgrades.

About 50-60 odds and sods, mostly silver - crowns, double florins and florins.

8 pieces of gold - and counting.

About 10 copper items, but I'm a silver man at heart.

Then there's the rupees, a little sideline but not extensive.

Commemorative medals - I must have 50 or so by now, dating from Cromwell to Elizabeth II.

Finally, the fruits of my tendency to pick out of my change any largely uncirculated coins which get hoarded.

Collections are housed in Nova trays or one of two cabinets; one a handsome mahogany one with brass fittings, the other bought from a numismatic acquaintance who made it himelf (quite expertly too). Spares and most decimals are kept in paper envelopes in a late Victorian wooden box which once belonged to my grandfather.

Hi Geoff,

I know absolutely nothing about Commemorative medals, but the Cromwell one sounds very interesting!

Can you post a picture?

Many thanks!

Dave,

It's this one

http://www.antique-silver.com/des/3218.htm

- although mine is in a much better condition, a good EF with all the high points (like Cromwell's nose) still there. I got mine from Colin Cooke who had bought it the day before, so I became its third owner in as many days.

If I get the chance this evening I'll organise a picture of my own for you.

Geoff

Tom....Are the counterfeits contemporary? In what metal were they struck? Any chance you could post a photo of one or two of them?
