Spanish Coin?

Recommended Posts

Guest Beamish

I've found an old, worn copper coin in the Beamish Museum collection and wondered if anybody could help ID it.

Roughly 25mm diameter, copper.

(Side 1) Bust of a bearded king(?) wearing a ruff and what looks like a double crown. The lettering reads: 'PHS.DG.HIS.Z.REX' - there may be more after this but it is unreadable.

(Side 2) Crowned shield - the emblem is worn away. Lettering reads: 'Dominus ...'

Any clues? Pictures are available if anyone is interested.

Ok the full legend should read "PHS. D.G. HISP. Z. REX. DV. BR", or a variant of this, if I've got my Kings right. This translates to "Philip by the Grace of God, King of Spain and Duke of Brabant." The reverse should read "DOMINVS. MIHI. ADIVTOR" which translates to "The Lord is my helper." This is a Spanish coin, but we would really need pictures to identify further with a suitable world coin catalogue.

Thanks for the help so far. I've tried to attach a low spec image to give you a proper look - hope this helps.
