Hispaniola 1780 Piece of Eight

Hi there,

I realise that this forum is mainly for British coins, so what i'm looking for is someone to tell me where I can get some information on a recent find.

I've come across a coin ( possibly Silver) dated 1780, with the markings

" Hispaniola 1780" and the picture of a Tall ship or galleon on one face and on the reverse face the face of a pirate (with obligatory eyepatch!) and the wording "1780 Piece of Eight".

If anyone knows what this is or can put me in touch with someone who does, I'd be very grateful.

This is almost certainly a modern coin, not even really a reproduction.

The "Piece of Eight" is a colloquial term for the Spanish 8 reales which was struck by the Mexico Mint in the mid-16th century until the mid-1800s.

The reales are round and feature the Pillars of Hercules surrounding crowned globes and ocean waves below, hence the other name for this coin, "Pillar Dollar". The reverse shows a crowned shield with the assayers initials to the left and the denomination in reales to the right.

The above image is a real piece of eight. As yours is a modern copy, it will be worth very little, if anything at all.

That's probably why all my searches in the Web showed up only the coin that you posted on the Forum, and nothing about this item.

This cannot be a Spanish coin, it is in English and at the time, been enemies I don't think they would mint anything in any other language than Spanish...
