Flawed 1994 Penny

Recommended Posts

Guest Gary

I have in my collection a 1994 Penny which has two large raised dots above the Queens head. This is definatly a die flaw and was wondering if anyone else has an example of this coin, or indeed heard of it?

Gary,

If you register, you can upload a picture of the coin if you have one?

Hello, Here is a scan of this coin, sorry it has taken a while. I have ringed the areas where the die has faults. I am sure that there must be more examples of this coin out there?

The spot on the righthand side, near the date, does appear to be a minor die chip. The two raised dots at the top almost look like they might be "lamination errors", from an air/gas bubble stuck to the blank steel planchet when it was copper plated. With mintage figures approaching the billion mark annually, I imagine that there will be many minor errors such as yours, they just have to be noticed.

Hi kuhli, thanks for taking the time to reply. If this is down to "lamination errors" then the bubbles would presumably be hollow? Anyway, thanks again.Gary

I remember having a George V halfpenny that was so badly laminated, half of the coin opened like a book! These things do occur and I wouldn't class them as 'minting errors', more metalic flaws.
