Coin Manage 2003

Recommended Posts

Coin Manage 2003 UK is a piece of software available from Liberty Street, a canadian based data base producer.

In it's current form the software is good and has many useful features, but because it was originally designed for US/Canadian coin collectors there are perhaps some improvements that could be made to make it easier to use for British collectors.

I have established this forum to collect points of view about the software and will submit them to the makers in the hope that the next version will be more useful (and sell more!) to British coin collectors.

I encourage you to download the 30 day trial product here:

ftp://libertystreet.com/pub/CoinMngUK.exe

Play around with it and make your feelings known in this forum. It will be beneficial to us all if the next release in more British coin collector friendly.

The download is however quite large at 39mb, so if you just email me, and assuming it breaks no copyright rules I don't mind sending it to you on CD for free.

The producers main site is here:

http://www.libertystreet.com/index.htm

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Trying it out myself the main problems I have noticed are that the full range of GB coin grades is not selectable when adding a coin to the database and the quoted catalogue values are out of date.

Thanks,

Chris.

DAS,

Yes I thought you might. I have burned a CD just now, so please remind me before I send your next batch. My memory is terrible lately.

Just got broadband a few days ago, and one of my first tests was to download the demo

I was sufficiently impressed to buy it - much easier than using Excel anyway.

To respond to the point Chris made in the other thread about grades - I agree that having all the American grades in the list in unhelpful and I couldn't (yet) find a way to add new ones (or remove the US ones), but you don't have to choose a grade from the list you can type in any text you like.

You can choose which grades to use when displaying the values for a coin type, but not when selecting the condition. We should request that as a future enhancement.

Hope this helps.

Custard,

You bought it after following a link from me? When, exactly? Can you tell me when and forward me the email receipt or a reference number, if you got one?

I want to make sure these Libertystreet people are honestly paying their commission properly. If not then I certainly won't be advertising them anymore!

Chris.

That's good but I think if the publisher could put British grades in it would be super

It looks to me like all the data is stored in an Access database, so it shouldn't be that hard to modify the grades list (assuming it's not hard-coded in the software).

It also wouldn't be too hard to knock up something to edit the list.

Sadly, I don't have the necessary tools at present but if Liberty Street aren't forthcoming I can investigate further.

dta,

That's a very good point....They are completely rubbish at responding to emails!!!

I have asked a few times about why I don't get my commission and I sometimes get a reply after a week, and I'm still waiting for a reply to my reply!

In fact because they're so crap I am considering stopping promoting their products on my site, as it isn't very rewarding in more ways than one....

I asked how they would feel to being sent the results of this forum about how they could improve the package and have heard nothing yet.

Absolutely terrible. I'm talking myself out of even trying to help them fast.

I sent Paul at Liberty Street Software the following email on the 6th January 2004:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Paul,

<<Stuff about shareware seller accounts etc>>

I also notice from my sellshareware.com account that I sold one of your Roman coins packages back it September. I never got anything for

that?

I have also started a discussion in my Forum on www.predecimal.com where people can discuss this product and suggest improvements

etc. All these people are experienced British coin collectors and have already spotted a few thing that could be improved. When we

have finished this would you like to receive our joint suggestions?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I waited until the 17th January 2004, and after getting no reply I sent the same message again on the 17th asking if they had got the first one.

10 days after that, still nothing. 21 days and no reply! The Liberty Street customer service is rubbish, absolutely awful and that wasn't the first time I have waited an un acceptable time for a reply to emails.

If they do not want to co-operate with me, I will not co-operate with them and I have removed all links and mentions of them from the website (I think... please let me know if you spot any!).

I cannot endorse such an inefficient company. Nor do I find the product particularly excellent.

Feel free to carry on discussing here, but bare in mind they probably won't listen!

I must admit that removing the links etc. has been long overdue as they just aren't willing to answer you.

Thanks for your support,

They are still linking to me as an example to encourage new affiliates:

http://www.libertystreet.com/affiliat.htm

I don't think the potential affiliates will be too impressed when they see the page that I used to promote Liberty Street on:

http://www.predecimal.com/coinmanage.htm

;-) Wicked I know, but not libelous, just honest. I wonder if it takes them 21 days or more to remove the link!

Hi Guys

Nice site you have.

I have tried to download the software several times and their end is very slow. I do have broadband!!

I contacted them by email and within minutes they replied and have posted me the cd for $5 which they say will be refunded if I buy the software. I have to say they responded twicw to my emails very quickly.

This was the email they repsonded on, PDD@libertystreet.com

So you perhaps try that for contacting them

Guest Tony Noon

Hi,

I've finally got to the stage of looking for some software that will manage my coins, do updates, give me history and information etc, but I haven't found quite what I'm looking for yet. I may have just missed it, but can anyone tell me if there is a bit of software that contains history of all coins, mints, is updateable via the internet and has catalogues available for coins from all over the world, not just one area.

Or is this something I'm going to have to write myself?

Tony

Tony,

That's a tall order. I don't know if there is anyone that would have the time to do software like that and include data for all world coins, with those features.

It is something that would be saleable, so if you can do it, perhaps we should go into partnership and offer Krause a run for their money!

I can write it and host it - I'm a database consultant for an IT company. The boss will let me use the server here to host it.

I've been thinking about it a lot recently. I also have a large dvd collection for which I use the free DVD Profiler by Intervocative software. It allows people to add their own additions and upload them to the master database and then download updates to their own collection, so they have a locally mirrored version of the database.

What I was thinking along the lines of is using the basic model as a starting point. So there is a local client which connects via the internet to download the master database. Users could submit additions/changes up to the internet.

If each country had it's own reference tables, they could be highly customised. I would also like to have information about various mints, their catalogues etc.

By giving users the ability to update the info then you could actually build a relatively large database in a shorter amount of time than having someone key in each entry by hand.

You could also have a better history of each coin, for example not only showing the mint, but the dates between it was produced, notes on it, web links, etc.

People could then add to each coin and get a really get reference library with it.

The biggest concern is the size of the update. The database could end up pretty massive and people aren't want to going to have to download masses of stuff each time. Perhaps if people could flag which country sets they want to download each time?

Hmmm.

If people think this is a good idea then perhaps we might roll it forward into a design phase.

I know enough about the software side but I'm only a amateur at the coin collecting, having only recently just started to take it fairly seriously.

I think then, my proposal is to set-up a website for starters that will allow people to see a basic design and say what they want in it. Even if nothing comes of it, someone could always give the design to another company.

Tony

The low lives, friends to the toilet maggot!! They took my money and run...no software...no money and no reply when I have emailed them. Things must be bad if they have to STEAL $5.00. Why don't the uk market have its own software???:angry:
