Hammered six pence 1566 - 1649

Today I'd like to share 2x  six pence added, Ive really had a good look into these and hopefully these are right ish.

1566 Queen Elizabeth I six pence

King Charles I. (Stuart (VI) six pence,   CHRISTO AUSPICE REGNO “I reign with Christ as my protector" Reign 27 March 1625 – 30 January 1649

was a king of England, Scotland and Ireland, whose conflicts with parliament and his subjects led to civil war and his execution,

 beheaded in London, England, on January 30, 1649..... Wow!

Portcullis mintmark on the Elizabeth sixpence…not the commonest of the Elizabeth 6d marks and a better grade 👍

... and the very clear triangle mintmark on the Charles I sixpence dates it to 1639/1640, minted at the Tower under the king's control.

If I am ever lucky enough to be able to build up a hammered collection, then I think I would concentrate on Charles I and the Tudor. Such fascinating periods of history!

The usual translation of "CHRISTO AVSPICE REGNO" usually is "I reign under the auspices of Christ". Charles I very much believed in the divine right of kings, meaning that kings only have to answer to God. Like you have pointed out, this didn't go well with parliament and resulted in his execution. 

You might already know the legend of the Elizabeth sixpence " POSVI DEV. ADIVTOREM. MEV" which translates to "I have made God my helper" and refers to Psalm 54:4.

Both coins were once bent and then straightened. This is very common with hammered coins and many reasons have been given. E.g. it was a way to detect forgery as silver bends easily, they were bent to make love tokens etc.
