following on from yesterdays failing of the....

"this I believe to be 40 Pence Scotland Charles I 1625-49, XL 3rd coinage ?"

yes! I was a bit miffed and I was really distracted by the an another questionable coin that I remembered just as I prepared for sleep...... I mulled it over and decided to tell and show even though I'd already decided to show all the silver coins first before moving on.

So it was purchased from a online auction place..... it was 2002? the seller had only one listed, he was employed as a furniture reupholster, it was a antique sofa type of furniture that been around for ever, the owner had jokingly said that he could keep any coins if he happened to find behind it, I remember although it meant nothing to me that it was made with horse hair and sack seat and when ripping it apart the coin had been found.... now he said he was reputable kind of person and when collected after being restored he asked if it was all right to keep any coins that he had found? the owner laughed and said yes you keep the change as a tip!!!! result?

so now, I seem to think that the owner before had it checked out and it was genuine...... 23 ish years on I guess I better get it checked out....is this been matter of Fact or Fiction?

I'm no expert but the colour seems quite dull. What does it weigh?

just kitchen scales so nothing arcuate, there's a local jeweller who's a good sort to know. i know of fake 9ct, I have genuine Victorian and all seems straight, I will keep checking and let you know the out come, Rgds "H"

so better photos in day light may be of use. 

the kitchen scales pick it up as 8grms, these are just kitchen scales so nothing definitive as being wrong as my others do show as 8grms as well.

Weight seems good, the coin polished though I think your original photos appear to likely not represent the coin well.  What I have sometimes done with NO risk is submerge such in dye-free ammonia for 5 or so minutes which will brighten it up but of course not oxidize it further; if you like the patina then by all means keep it as is.

Hello and thank you, it was a interesting story and seemed to be believable, the guy sell was a furniture restorer, he claimed it was checked and all seemed well. as I age I get paranoid... the others I have have come from a historical coin dealer and some good deals happened why before the gold rush.. Sovereigns for £100 ! I will get the Silver shown and the Sovereigns and Guineas to follow.  

In the 90's it was a bowl of warm soapy water and a soft tooth brush rinse in cold water and pat with kitchen towel.... just to get the grime and grease off.
