South African 3p coins

Recommended Posts

Following on from my grandfathers Hoard......

A boot fair find would have been 1990's, 1933's up to 1953's.. theres some tarnish and what looks like undoing a screw with a few..

I know there's some 1960's Rands somewhere that came with the 3p's... I seem to think this was a haggle as they were believed to be silver... really hope to find these next....

I need to ask if the South African 3p worth keeping or move them on... I don't feel attached to them so its not a issue. thoughts views values? greatly appreciated.

many thanks "H"

I thought the early ones were 80% silver but possibly the later ones were devalued to 50%. They should all be silver I believe.

I had a interested party and was advised the following......

Hi. I collect silver threepence's - the silver price is high. If you want to sell all you have I will pay spot 83p per gram ASW.

They are 1.41grams each.

1919 and earlier = 1.30 grams asw  1919 and earlier = £1.08 each

1920 to 1946 = 0.70 grams asw 1920 to 1946 = £0.58 each

my response is...

so i'm still open to offers and even trades... cheers "H"

If he's happy to pay full spot price for the scrap ones, I'd snap his hand off. Still 83p. Just looked.

I don't think even the silver traders can sell at spot price. No margin for mark up or allowances for the price to fall.
