Coin Clipping, how does it affect value?

Hi,

I just wondered how a value of a coin is affected by clipping. A coin that is clipped could still be in a very fine condition detail wise. Does the clipping reduce the grade or is it taken into account seperately?

I'd say clipping reduces value. Personally, I'd grade it and place it with a note (eg. VF with minor/major clipping).

I agree.

Minor clipping on say just one edge wouldn't knock a vast amount off, but when you have heavily clipped ones with legends missing, the coin is going to come crashing down in value.

The important factor has to bge the legibility of the legend on both sides. Hammered coins were often clipped and such examples do have a place in collections. The value would depend on: -

first - rarety

second - legibility

third - strike

That's in my opinion anyway!
