Pre-Decimal Copper Coin Cleaning

I have a collection of old half pennies dating back to 1900. Unfortunately, through lack of care and attention over the years, they have become very dark and faded. I have been told to be careful and not to over-clean or polish them as it could ruin them. However, I am trying to get them into a better condition to display them. Can anyone give me any hints as to how I could get them into a better condition with a bit of a sheen, as I am not an expert on the care of old coins?

I may be the extremist here on this, but any form of cleaning of copper and bronze should be avoided.

If the coins are worn down such that no hair detail is apparent, it won't really matter what you do, but if the coins are collectible, at least "fine," leave well enough alone. I'd much rather have a brown EF than a cleaned, artifically coloured "UNC."

Whilst I agree with Wybrit why don't you try this on a grimy one.

A warm soapy water solution,a soft toothbrush and a softened toothpick(soak it first).

Make sure you pat it dry.

If the coins have turned green....you've had it.
