1875 Heaton farthing

Recommended Posts

Hi,

The images below are of a metal detecting find. My 2002 copy of Spink indicates that they are worth a bit more than your average farthing but I was wondering what grade the coin is and what effect on prices the condition of this particular coin has? As you can see the actual coin is not particularly corroded, it's pretty intact when you view it at an angle but the patina of the coin is very mottled!

Your thoughts and rough value gratefully received! :D

Thanks,

Adrian.

That's a pretty nicely preserved find. Based on the pictures, my estimate of condition is VF, perhaps gVF. 1875H farthings are pretty common, but certain varieties are worth a pretty penny. The "REG" lettering is the unborken die type and the bust is the common one (not the highly desireable "full rose" variety, unfortunately).

There are a large number of minor varieties, with overstruck dates being among them, such as "8 over 8" or "7 over 7." You may want to give the date itself a looking over.

A cracking date with small and large date and differing nr of Berries (In Victoria's hair)

The H is the most common but is still worth checking out...as Whybrit notes.

The non Heaton 1875 is rare small & large date....if in VF+ get it if the price is right.

It took me 20 years to get the small date in a grade I wanted (without Mrs Peter knowing) :D
