Rob Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005 Help please, can't decide whether it is E1 or E2. I think it is class 11a, but want a second opinion. Canterbury mint. Quote
Geordie582 Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005 I admit this is puzzling. Coincraft has the obverse legend at EDWAR R ANGL DNS HYB on the drawing but quotes EDWAR ANGL DNS HYB in the text. The broken lefthand spear on the crown, bifoliate crown, lettering and hairstyle makes me agree with Edward II class 11a. You don't specify size but as there are no halfpennies in the series from canterbury, it must be a penny! Quote
Rob Posted December 1, 2005 Author Posted December 1, 2005 Thank you Geordie. PS the title said penny Quote
Geordie582 Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005 Yeh! But it wouldn't be the first time I've come across an Edward 'penny' measuring 11mm (especially on ebay) Quote

North is non-commital on this saying merely that E2 is as E1 which of course gives both EDWA R and EDWAR R as possibilities. Hawkins does the same. Quote
Geordie582 Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005 I think there was no real seperation between the reigns, and any variation was both regional and gradual rather than "a new broom" approach. It's probable that the various classes were in use for a wide timeframe around the succession. Quote
