1815 token?

Recommended Posts

Guest Zoso65

My dad has had this token for 5 years and cant find any information on it, I was hoping someone here might know something about it.

on one side theres wellingtons face and the other side it says wellington waterloo 1815. Its about the size of a quarter and looks to be copper.

If I can get a good picture of it I'll post it later.

Thanks for any information you can give me.

I would have to dig out my Canada book, but I believe these things were issued as halfpenny tokens in Upper Canada(Ontario) right after Waterloo. In effect they were a necessity issue that also duly commemorated Wellington's victory.

I have a few Canadian tokens with Wellington on, that's what I suspected it was.

'Coins of Canada' by J.A. Haxby & R.C. Willey lists a lot of Duke of Wellington pieces under Lower Canada (now Quebec). Some were struck for issue in Canada, but others were imported from England.

Aidan.
