Most Expensive British Penny

Can anybody help me out about the most expensive british penny to date ??

I would appriciate it a lot.

As far as my knowledge goes...it was of Edward VII Period ??

It's impossible to say with real accuracy because the mega rarities are not often sold, and when they are sold they usually get auctioned and the prices go up each time.

To date, the most expensive British penny ever was the gold Anglo-Saxon Coenwulf penny found a year or 2 ago. That went for £240,000 the first time, and know I think the asking price is more like £300,000.

As for modern pennies, the 1933 might raise more than a 1937 Edward VIII.

For 20C issues the 1954 or 1952 proof will be up with the 1933.

A rareity equivalent in the states would demand 20 fold.

The Coenwulf penny was owned by Alan Davisson, a Minnesota coin dealer who sells a lot of British coins. He just recently sold it. The new owner plans to sell it to the British Museum. The coin itself is incredible.

There's alot of rare pennies out there not to mention the Henry III Gold penny... (which being a 20 pence coin is not exactly a real penny, but then again the Coenwulf penny isn't exactly a penny either, as i believe that's also a 20 pence coin).

1933 and Edward VIII 1937 might be the high budget ones, but don't forget the 1954 penny.

Although if you want expensive and rare try Howel Da (or however you spell that) which is unique. As are alot of the uncommon Anglo-Saxon types, there must be a list full of Eadgar 'fancy' pennies that notch up alot of £££.
